PIRATE GIRLS TENNIS KNOCKS OFF PARKERS PRAIRIE IN FIRST ROUND OF SECTION TOURNEY

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team beat Parkers Prairie 7-0 in the first round of the Section 8A Girls Tennis tournament in a match played at the Crookston High School Tennis Courts in Crookston.  “The girls came out strong and played well from top to bottom,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “Parkers Prairie has made some nice strides over the past couple of years and gave us a good match.”

SINGLES –
Crookston’s Hayden Winjum was the last match on the courts once again and she won a hard-fought first set 7-6 (7-5 in the tie-breaker) and she cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set. “Hayden had a tough opponent and that was nice to see,” said Coach Brekken. “She had a tight first set and then got over the hump and played well in the second set.”

Halle Winjum was solid and won her second singles match 6-0, 6-1.  Halle is the only Pirate regular that hasn’t lost a match this season.  “Halle was tough again and played the way she plays,” said Coach Brekken. “She found her spots like she normally does and played well.”

Brekken Tull continues to play well and won her third singles match 6-2, 6-1.  “Brekken has made huge strides this year and has really found her home in singles,” said Coach Brekken. “It is great to see her confidence late in the year.”

At fourth singles, Hannah Lindemoen played an outstanding match and was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. “Hannah came out strong and bounced back with a nice match,” said Coach Brekken.  “She didn’t have the best match at Roseau, so it was great to see her come out strong today and be the first person to give us a win.”

DOUBLES –
Catherine Tiedemann and Abby Borowicz were teamed up at first doubles and they cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. “They really gel well and play off each other,” said Coach Brekken. “They communicated well and had great net play.  It was good to see them play well together.”

The second doubles team of Emma Osborn and Emma Gunderson won 6-2, 6-0.  “The Emma’s played well again and got after it today,” said Coach Brekken. “The communicated well and continue to play some solid tennis.”

Halle Bruggeman and Macy Fee cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.  “They have played together a few times now and keep playing better each time,” said Coach Brekken. “They had good groundstrokes, good net play and it was nice to see them win 6-1, 6-1.”

Crookston improves to 11-1 on the year and will host the #4 seed Perham Yellowjackets at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
