SPORTS FEEVER – NOVEMBER 5, 2020

I would like to commend the activities directors across the state that have been dealing with postponing/canceling games like crazy throughout the sports season.  It has been a challenge and you never know what to expect each day.  The A.D.’s, coaches, and players have been flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to play.  The A.D.’s have been wheeling and dealing when a game is canceled because of COVID and finding the kids another chance to play.  High School sports is an educational tool that is extremely valuable, but this year has thought the kids patience, perseverance, and one thing we have been talking about for years….life isn’t fair.

With that said, some area schools are getting back from two-week quarantine and some teams are going into it.  It is better to happen now than having to miss playoffs, so that is the positive part of going through it at this time.  Thank you and enjoy another Feever column.

There have been so many schedule changes with football and volleyball that we can’t keep up with it. But here are a few changes –

Crookston Pirate Football will host Barnesville instead of going to Barnesville on November 11 for the final game of the regular season.

Crookston Pirate Volleyball won’t play Bagley on Tuesday, November 10, but they have added a home match vs Mahnomen-Waubun on Monday, November 9.

Red Lake County football will host Lake Park-Audubon on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Wed, Nov 11th: Red Lake County will be at Menahga at 6:00
Mon, Nov 16th: Red Lake County will be at Mahnomen-Waubun at 3:00

UMC Men’s Basketball’s Harrison Cleary has signed to play professional basketball in Spain. An injury opened the door for Cleary. The press release from his new team is below. It is loosely translated.
Being late, a new point guard has arrived in Castellón who will cover the loss of Joan Faner while he is still injured. Harrison Cleary, 1.85 m tall and 22 years old, played at the University of Minnesota Crookston in the NCAA2 where he averaged 26.6 points per game and 4.2 assists last season. Harrison, who played with Castellón’s Javi Nicolau (now the center of Mi Arquitecto Benicarló from LEB Plata), is a very fast player with a good three-point shot and a very good finisher. Like all rookies, Harrison is the first time he has played outside his country and tomorrow he will be under Toni Ten and on Friday against HLA Alicante it is possible that he will already play his first game.

The Region 8 committee is looking for a volleyball section championship site in December.  UMC still isn’t allowing non-students and staff on campus at this time.  So the committee will likely wait until they find out who is in the championship game to figure out where to play.

I saw Wayne State College in Wayne, America (Nebraska) is going to have a men’s and women’s basketball intrasquad scrimmage on November 10.  Crowds are allowed and they will be having a food drive too.   Things are a lot different in Nebraska than the U of M campus.

The Summit League announced Wednesday the adjusted conference schedules for the 2020-21 basketball season.
For both men’s and women’s basketball, Summit League schools will play a 16-game conference schedule between Saturday, Jan. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 28. Teams will play the same opponent twice at one site to reduce travel, with each school hosting four weekends and playing on the road four weekends.
The men’s basketball and women’s basketball league schedules are identical, with doubleheaders scheduled for all 16 games.

The NAIA made a huge announcement for student-athletes this week. The NAIA’s Council of Presidents Executive Committee voted not to charge fall and winter student-athletes a season of competition for the 2020-21 academic year.
12 of 19 conferences were in favor of removing the 50 percent rule. The 50 percent rule stated a student-athlete will only be charged a season of competition when the student participates in more than 50 percent of the maximum allowable games in any sport, or the student competes in NAIA-approved postseason.

JOKES

One day at a busy airport, the passengers on a commercial airliner are seated waiting for the pilot to show up so they can get under way.
The pilot and copilot finally appear in the rear of the plane and begin walking up to the cockpit through the center aisle. Both appear to be blind; the pilot is using a white cane, bumping into passengers right and left as he stumbles down the aisle. The copilot is using a guide dog. Both have their eyes covered with sunglasses.
At first, the passengers do not react thinking that it must be some sort of practical joke. After a few minutes though, the engines start revving, and the airplane begins moving down the runway.
The passengers look at each other with some uneasiness. They start whispering among themselves and look desperately to the stewardesses for reassurance.
Yet, the plane starts accelerating rapidly, and people begin panicking. Some passengers are praying, and as the plane gets closer and closer to the end of the runway, the voices are becoming more and more hysterical.
When the plane has less than twenty feet of runway left, there is a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screams at once. At the very last moment, the plane lifts off and is airborne.
Up in the cockpit, the copilot breathes a sigh of relief and tells the pilot: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we aren’t going to know when to take off!”
