CROOKSTON BOY’S HOCKEY ERUPTS FOR 5 SECOND PERIOD GOALS IN WIN OVER WAHPETON-BRECKENRIDGE

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team was able to score 5 second period goals on Tuesday night and beat the Wahpeton-Breckenridge Blades 6-2 to win their second straight game. “Always fun to win, and the boys had another good effort tonight,” said Pirates coach Josh Hardy. “Came out a little flat-footed in the first after playing last night, and they took us a bit by surprise. I was proud of the guys though and we turned it on the rest of the game. We took another step forward today and it’s important we keep working as we get ready for the next two games later this week.”

FIRST PERIOD –
Crookston would get on the board first just 4:55 into the game, with Brandon Colborn scoring his 3rd goal of the season to give the Pirates the 1-0 lead. “We had good chances to score early but their goaltender was playing well,” said coach Hardy. “Brandon (Colborn) put a nice shot on net to get us started and that was big for us.” The Pirates would then be awarded a five minute Power Play shortly after due to a hit on Teagen Lubinski. However, it was the Blades who would respond later in the first and knot the game at 1-1 on a shorthanded goal from Jack Ritenour. Crookston couldn’t capitalize on the long Power Play, and that would be the end of the scoring through one period, and the two teams would skate into the first intermission with a 1-1 tie. The Pirates outshot the Blades 11-4 in the first frame.

SECOND PERIOD –
It was all Pirates in the second frame, and Crookston would score five goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead after two periods of play. “Carter Trudeau got it started for us with a big-time shorthanded goal where he went end to end and slid it five hole,” said coach Hardy.” Then it was really our top line that took the game over and were able to get a bunch of even-strength goals with Trudeau adding another, (Ryan) Street getting one, and then Jack (Doda) being able to score three beautiful goals for a hat trick.” Wahpeton-Breckenridge was able to add one goal of their own late in the period, but the damage was done as Crookstonn was in front 6-2.

THIRD PERIOD –
The Pirates were able to sit on the lead in the final period and got a great game from Jaren Bailey in net to pick up the 6-2 win. “We rolled four lines and five defensemen in the third when we weren’t on the penalty kill and were able to get everyone involved,” said coach Hardy. “Even though we didn’t score we put lots of pucks on net and were able to get a lot of opportunities. The effort was there all night and I was really proud of the way we handled the early adversity and took care of business.” Jaren Bailey would earn the win in net saving 14 shots and surrendering 2 goals.

Crookston improves to 4-16-1 on the season and will host Lake of the Woods on Friday night. Wahpeton-Breckenridge falls to 1-20 with the loss.
