MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES AFTER BARRICADING HIMSELF IN BASEMENT STARTING FIRE

On Saturday, March 9 at approximately 2:25 p.m., Grand Forks Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of University Ave for a report of a subject who had reportedly entered a residence without permission, had brandished a knife, and then went into the basement.  The resident of the house called and reported the incident to PSAP and relayed that the smoke detectors in the house were going off.

Upon arrival, officers were able to evacuate the residents of the house and found that the male suspect had barricaded himself in the basement of the residence and had started a fire inside the residence.  The suspect refused to come out of the basement.

The Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team, Crisis Negations Team, and Bomb Squad were called to the scene.  They attempted to communicate with the suspect and have him exited the basement but he refused.  Through continued efforts, the subject was eventually taken into custody and transported to Altru Hospital, where he was evaluated and released.

The suspect, Patrick Aune (33 y/o), was taken to the Grand Forks County Correctional Center and charged with two (2) counts of Endangerment by Fire, one (1) count of Burglary, and one (1) count of assault on a police officer.
