The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team beat the Thief River Falls Prowlers 5-2 to end the season on a nine-match winning streak and was 10-1 in Section 8A play.
CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS-
Crookston beat Thief River Falls in the first meeting of the year 4-3. They used the same lineup and won 5-2 today. Thief River Falls moved several players around in their lineup and it didn’t matter as the Pirates continue to play great team tennis.
The Pirates won three of the four singles matches, with Isaac Thomforde beating TRF’s Jett Cornelius for the first time in his career. In the first meeting this season, Cornelius beat Thomforde in three sets. Thomforde played an outstanding first set and won 6-3, then a hard-fought second set 6-4 to win the match. At second singles, Reggie Winjum continued his solid play as he won the first set 6-3 and cruised to a 6-2 second set victory to win the match. TRF moved Lucas Rantanen from first doubles to third singles as he beat Crookston’s Gunnar Groven in a battle. The first set went to Rantanen 6-4. The second set was a back-and-forth battle, with Rantanen squeaking out a 7-5 victory to win the match. In the fourth singles match, Sam Widseth cruised to a 6-3 first-set victory and won the second set 6-0.
Crookston won two of the three doubles matches. The first doubles team of Grant Funk and Jack Everett continued their outstanding play, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The second doubles team of Caden Boike and Tim Brule coasted to a 6-0 first set victory and won a much closer second set 6-4. The third doubles match went to Thief River Falls, but the match was much closer this match compared to the match between the same four players earlier this year. Thief River Falls won 6-2, 7-5.
Crookston won the match 5-2 to finish the regular season on a nine-match winning streak and a 10-1 record in Section 8A play. Crookston ends the regular season with a 13-4 record. The Section 8A seeding meeting is Friday night, and the first round of the Section 8A Team tournament is Monday at Osakis.
