Crookston Pirate Baseball beats Hillsboro/Central Valley

The Crookston Pirate Baseball team exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits to beat the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros 10-5 in the Jim Karn Classic played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

FIRST INNING-
Crookston pitcher, Gavyn Hlucny started the game on a good note as he got the first batter to fly out to center field, struck out the next batter, and after a single, he struck out the next batter.
Crookston couldn’t have asked for a better start to the offensive side of the game as leadoff batter Matthew Contreras blasted a line drive over the right fielder’s head with a two-hopper to the right field fence for a leadoff triple.
Parker Kelly followed with an rbi double down the left-field line to give Crookston a 1-0 lead. Kelly stole third base and scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.

SECOND INNING-
HCV was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two strikeouts and a pop-out. Crookston kept the offense going in the second inning when Isaiah Donarski was hit by a pitch, Cody Demarais laced a line drive down the first baseline off the tip of the glove of the first baseman into right field. A run scored on an error and after the next two batters were retired, Hlucny tripled to right field to score a run for a 4-0 lead. Greyson Ecker walked before Carter Fee hit a ground ball to third base and it got past the fielder and two runs scored for a 6-0 lead.

THIRD INNING –
The first Burro batter was hit by a pitch and the next batter walked. The next three batters were retired with a pop out, a fielder’s choice for an out at third base, and a ground out.
Crookston’s Nolan Cassavant reached on an error, Demarais reached on a walk and Contreras hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score a run for a 7-0 lead.

FOURTH INNING-
HCV reached on an error with one out before a single and a double scored a run to get within a 7-1 deficit. The next batter walked and after a strikeout two runs scored on an error and the Burros were within a 7-3 deficit.
The first two batters were retired before Fee singled, but the next batter struck out.

FIFTH INNING-
The first Burro batter flew out. The next batter struck out but reached on a wild pitch. The next batter was hit by a pitch before a single scored another run. The next batter singled to score another run and HCV trailed 7-5.
The first two batters were retired before Demarais singled, but the next batter flew out.

SIXTH INNING-
The first HCV batter struck out. Crookston’s Parker Kelly was pitching and called for a balk. Matt Contreras came onto pitch. He took over a 3-1 count and walked the batter before retiring the next two batters.
Kelly getting the unfair and incorrect ejection seemed to fire up the Pirates as Ecker singled, Fee doubled to score a run. Lucas Perala doubled to score a run for a 9-5 lead. Cassavant reached on an error and another scored for a 10-5 lead.

SEVENTH INNING-
The first HCV batter singled before Contreras struck out the next three batters and Crookston won the game 10-5.

Crookston improves to 2-4 on the year and will play Red Lake County on Saturday at Noon. Hillsboro/Central Valley drops to 7-6 on the year.
