Crookston Pirate Volleyball drops road test to Warroad

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team couldn’t quite put the pieces together on Tuesday night, as they fell to the Warroad Warriors in three sets by a score of 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 in Warroad on Tuesday night.

FIRST SET
The two teams alternated the first 6 points of the match before the Warriors took off for their first run of the set. They capitalized on Pirate errors to edge ahead to a 9-6 advantage, and then an Atlee Larson Kill gave the warriors their first offensive point, and that sparked a 6-1 run, giving the Warriors a 15-7 lead. The Pirates had good play come from Jayde Uttermark and Ally Wagner, who had two kills and an ace apiece in this set, but the serve-receive was the biggest issue. The Warriors were able to extend their lead, and after an Abi Bruley swing went long, the Warriors took a 25-15 set victory, claiming the first one in this match.

SECOND SET
The second set started out a lot closer than the first, with both teams playing pretty even volleyball until each team reached 6 points. From there, the Warriors began to edge ahead, as an Attlee Larson ace capped off a 6-2 run, putting Warroad up 12-8. The lead wouldn’t get much bigger than that, as the Pirates got even more kills from Jayde Uttermark, but they were unable to take the lead. After closing the gap to 13-12, Warroad used another 6-1 run to take a 19-13 lead. They extended their lead out to 24-17, and even though the Pirates scored a flurry of points at the end, it wasn’t enough, as the Warriors took the second set 25-20 to go up 2 sets to none.

THIRD SET
Warroad started the third set on fire, taking a 7-2 lead. Crookston started to fight back, as back-to-back Abi Bruley kills helped the Pirates close the gap down to 8-6. However, the Warriors continued to do what they did all match to this point, and played well enough to keep the lead at a multi-point gap, too far for the Pirates to come back from. They were able to close the gap briefly, but a 7-0 run made it 15-6, and the writing was on the wall from there. Warroad leaned on Reagan Haley again, and she put away three of the final 5 points to give Warroad a 25-15 set win, taking the match 3 sets to none.

Crookston falls to 1-16 on the season and will take on East Grand Forks on Thursday. Warroad improves to 4-15 on the season.
