Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Pony Girls Basketball uses tough defense to beat Stephen-Argyle

The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies started the game by scoring the first 21 points and went on a 37-2 run to start the game as they cruised to a 65-21 victory over the Stephen-Argyle Storm in Argyle. It was the season opener for both teams,

FIRST HALF –
Warren-Alvarado-Oslo (WAO) wanted to set the tone right away with their stellar defense and they did just that from the opening tip. The Ponies used suffocating defense to force several turnovers throughout the first half and made life miserable for Stephen-Argyle. WAO scored the first 21 points of the game. Macey Boe led the Ponies with eight points, Markelle Pederson with six, Annie Peterson had four, and Meila Pierce added a three-pointer for a 21-0 lead.
Stephen-Argyle finally got the lid off the basket with 9:44 remaining in the half as Alexis Labine drove through the lane and banked a runner off the backboard and into the basket to get the Storm within a 21-2 deficit. WAO answered with a 16 point run with Annie Peterson scoring six points, Markell Pederson added five, Pierce had three points, and Kenley Marquis added two points for a 37-2 lead with 2:20 to go in the half. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the half and WAO took a 41-6 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
WAO scored the first 11 points of the second half as Boe scored seven points, Pederson and Naomi Davey had a basket apiece for a 52-6 lead a little over three minutes into the half. Stephen-Agyle’s Adley McGregor buried a three-pointer and after the Ponies scored four points, McGregor hit another three-pointer as the Freshman had 10 points for the Storm. With the Ponies leading 54-14 halfway through the half, running time kicked in so the last nine minutes of the game went quickly. Both teams went to the bench and WAO cruised to a 65-21 victory.

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo improves to 1-0 on the year and will host BGMR on Tuesday. Stephen-Argyle drops to 0-1 on the year and will host Goodridge/Grygla on Tuesday.
