The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team had three goals from Adley Vigness and Lauren Tull scored her first varsity goal, but a late comeback wasn’t enough in a 6-4 loss to River Lakes at Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls. River Lakes includes Roccori, St. John’s Prep, New London, Paynesville, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the teams co-op.
FIRST PERIOD
River Lakes came out strong, using their speed to get to most of the loose pucks and the had eight shots on goal in the first eight minutes of the game. On the ninth shot of the game, River Lakes’s Peyton Roeske tipped a shot that was around her waist and it deflected straigth down and into the net to give the Stars a 1-0 lead halfway through the period. Crookston finally got their first shot on net with 7:37 left in the period when Christina Hershey put a shot on goal, and almost scored. Less than a minute later, Crookston’s Adley Vigness intercepted a pass and skated up the ice along the boards. Once she got into the Stars zone she cut towards the net and whistled a wrist shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with four minutes left in the period.
Neither team scored in the final minutes and the teams were tied at 1-1 going into the first intermission. River Lakes outshot Crookston 14-3 in the period.
SECOND PERIOD
Crookston came out stronger to start the second period and had four of the first five shots on goal, but Stars goalie Lillian Hansen made the saves. The play was a little more even the rest of the period, but River Lakes took advantage of the Pirates coughing up the puck and Roeske grabbed the puck at center ice and flew into the Pirate zone and wristed a shot over the shoulder of the Pirate goali into the upper right-hand corner of the net for a 2-1 lead. A little over four minutes later, River Lakes’ Sophie Olson had a shot from the point and the Pirate goalie was screened and the puck went into the net for a 3-1 lead with two minutes to go in the period and that is how the period would end, with the starts lead 3-1.
THIRD PERIOD
The start of the third period wasn’t a good one for the Pirates as River Lakes scored 68 seconds into the period for a 4-1 lead. Crookston responded a little over two minutes later when Crookston’s Rilynn Aubol slid a pass over to her defensive partner Lauren Tull. Lauren let a shot go from the point and it made it through traffic into the net for the eighth grader’s first varsity goal to bring the Pirates within a 4-2 deficit.
River Lakes responded with a goal over seven minutes later to take a 5-2 lead halfway through the period.
Crookston’s Adley Vigness took over the game. Vigness skated around the zone looking for an opening and came in and rifled a wrist shot into the net to bring the Pirates within a 5-3 deficit. A little under two minutes later, Vigness brought the puck into the Stars zone and skated toward the net and sniped a wrist shot into the net to get within a 5-4 deficit. Crookston was called for a penalty a short-time later and River Lakes took advantage and scored a power play goal for a 6-4 lead with 1:45 remaining. Crookston wasn’t able to score and River Lakes won the game 6-4.
Adley Vigness had a hat trick and Lauren Tull scored the first goal of her varsity career.
Crookston drops to 1-6 on the year and will host #2 ranked Warroad on Tuesday. You can watch the game on KROX TV. River Lakes improves to 3-3-1 on the year.
