Crookston Pirate Wrestling drops opening season duel to Mahnomen-Waubun

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team was only able to win three matches in a 60-14 dual loss to the Mahnomen-Waubun Thunderbirds in a Section 8A matchup in Waubun on Thursday night.

Mahnomen-Waubun won the first match of the dual by a forfeit at 107 pounds for a 6-0 lead. Mauricio Arriaga got the Pirates on the board at 114 pounds. Mauricio was dominant from the start and beat Avery Bush by a tech fall (22-5) at 4:25, and the Pirates trailed 6-5. Crookston was open at 121 pounds, and the Thunderbirds took a 12-5 lead. Mahnomen/Waubun won the next two matches by pin in the second periods for a 24-5 lead. Crookston got back on the board when Jose Contreras won by a forfeit at 139 pounds to get the Pirates within a 24-11 deficit. Crookston was open at 145 pounds and lost by forfeit before Gavyn Hlucney, ranked #2 in the state at 152 pounds was up next. He took on Gabriel Demere and had a good battle for six minutes and was able to come away with a 10-5 dual victory to bring the Pirates within a 30-14 deficit. Mahnomen/Waubun won the next four matches by pin and were open at heavyweight, and the Thunderbirds won the match 60-14.

Crookston drops to 0-1 on the season and will next compete at the Hillsboro/Central Valley Dual Jamboree on Saturday.
