The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team could not find any answers against the #4 Warroad Warriors, and were shut out by a score of 7-0 at the Crookston Sports Center on Tuesday night.
FIRST PERIOD
The first period started out pretty slow for both teams, as neither team had a shot on goal for the first two minutes of the period. After Warroad’s first two were stopped by Brady Chandler, the Pirates’ first and only shot of the period was stopped Patrick Kennedy. The Pirates had lots of opportunities in the Warrior zone, but kept having shots blocked or passes broken up. After Warroad hit the post from the blue line, this created a scramble in front of Chandler, and Wyatt Samuelson was able to cash in, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. However, the Pirate defense stood firm, blocking shots and preventing Chandler from having to do too much in net. Unfortunately, this came to a screeching halt with 18 seconds left in the period, as a hit by Jay Reese on Wesley Schreiner knocked his helmet off, and the officials determined that to be enough for a 5-minute major penalty for head contact. Warroad then was able to score with 9 seconds left from Broden Hontvet, and headed into the 2nd period with a 2-0 lead, and a 4:42 power play to start the period.
SECOND PERIOD
In the second period, the Warriors started with 4:43 on the power play, and did record 7 shots on goal, but the Pirates, led by Brady Chandler, stopped every one. The last one of those from Chandler was stopped while he was on his stomach and without his stick. The Pirates also got a breakaway for Garrett Fischer as the penalty ended, but Patrick Kennedy made the stop. After this, the Pirates had a couple more chances within the next minute, but both times the puck hit the side of the cage. For Warroad, they continued to pepper Chandler until they finally got through at 10:30 off a great shot from Rodrick Jackson, and that put the Warriors up 3-0. Then, a few minutes later, Grant Funk committed a slashing minor, and Casey Hendrickson scored with 2 seconds left on the power play, capping off 6:41 of 5-on-4 hockey for the Warriors with a 4-0 lead. The Pirates got only one other shot on goal in the period, and it was a breakaway from Jay Reese, but Kennedy put a stop to that one as well, and the Warriors held on to a 4-0 lead at the end of the period.
THIRD PERIOD
As the third period got underway, the Warriors continued to wear down the Pirates. Even though they got less shots on goal in the period, more of them beat Chandler, who was having a sensational game to this point. He was beat on multiple breakaways, first by Ryan Shaugabay in even strength, and then next by Gavin Andersen, while the Warriors were shorthanded. Andersen had a goal and three assists on the night, with his third one coming on the final goal of the game, as Broden Hontvet scored his second of the night and third power play goal for the Warriors to put them up 7-0. Once again, the Pirates could only muster 2 shots on goal in the period, totaling 5 for the game, and the Warriors would use that to cruise to a 7-0 victory.
Crookston drops to 9-6-1 on the year, 4-4 in section play. Warroad is now 13-4-1, 5-0 in the section.
