The East Grand Forks Green Wave’s Tatem Votava broke her program’s career scoring record with her 20th point of the game, and the Wave cruised to a 75-45 victory over the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team in a Section 8AA matchup played at the EGF Senior High gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
East Grand Forks came out strong with a pair of Jersey Perkerewicz three-pointers and a basket from Lillie Thorvilson (daughter of former Highland School Principal Travis Thorvilson) for an 8-3 lead. Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman stopped the run with a basket before EGF’s Perkerewicz nailed her third three for a 15-7 lead. The teams exchanged points for a few minutes, and EGF led 20-16 when Tatem Votava made back-to-back three-pointers, and Perkerewicz added a basket for a 28-16 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Crookston would make a basket and EGF answered with two baskets and led 36-21.. Madi Bruggeman made two free throws before Thorvilson made a three-pointer to spark a Green Wave 7-2 run to end the half for a 43-25 lead.
SECOND HALF
Crookston’s Grace Boll started the half with a three-pointer before EGF answered with a 6-1 run after three-pointers from Thorvilson and Votava for a 51-29 lead. Crookston’s Chloe Boll made a basket before Votava followed with a three-pointer for her 20th point of the game and the 1,843 points of her career, which made her the all-time career points leader for Green Wave girls basketball, passing Chelsea Frydenlund and Ashley Thinglestad. After the stoppage of play to honor Votava Crookston, Chloe Boll made a three-pointer, and Grace Boll followed with a basket to get within a 54-36 deficit. EGF countered with a 10-2 run with five different players scoring during the run for a 64-38 lead with seven minutes remaining. The Greenwave continued to pull away, and both teams went to the bench for the rest of the game, and East Grand Forks won 75-45.
Crookston drops to 4-12 on the year, and the game against Barnseville on Friday has been postponed to a later date. East Grand Forks improves to 10-5 on the year.
Tatem Votava has a couple more numbers she would like to hit. Tatem’s brother, Sam Votava, scored 1,962 points in his career from 2015 to 2021. The second milestone would be the overall Green Wave Basketball career scoring record set by Nick Mertens with 2010 points from 2000 to 2004.
