The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team lost to the Roseau Rams 48-20 and lost to the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators 42-28 in a pair of Section 8A duals at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
CROOKSTON VS ROSEAU
Roseau started the match with a forfeit win at 107 pounds for a 6-0 lead.
At 114 pounds, Crookston’s Mauricio Arriaga started the match with a takedown in a few seconds. There wouldn’t be any scoring the rest of the period. In the second period, Arriaga started down and got a reversal early on, and again that would be the only scoring of the period as he took a 5-0 lead into the third period. The only points of the third period came when Arriaga was called for a potentially dangerous hold, and the lead was 5-1. That was how the match ended, and Arriaga won by a 5-1 decision.
Roseau’s Nash Ziska won the 121-pound match with a quick takedown and a pin in 57 seconds.
There was a double forfeit at 127 pounds. At 133 pounds, Roseau’s Meryk Ullman started with a takedown and four near-fall points for a 7-0 lead 54 seconds into the match. Ullman gave up an escape before getting another takedown and a short time later Ullman got a pin.
Crookston was open at 139 and 145 pounds before Crookston’s Gavyn Hlucny picked up a win at 152 pounds. Hlucny, ranked #4 in the state, pounced on Roseau’s Keane Johnson with a takedown 14 seconds into the match. Hlucny added four near-fall points for a 7-0 lead, and a few seconds later, Hlucny won by a pin at 1:17.
At 160 pounds, Crookston’s Lucas Perala started the match with a take-down and got a pin 42 seconds into the match.
At 172 pounds, Jaron Knutson kept the Pirate winning streak going as he started the match with a take-down. After giving up an escape, he countered with another takedown for a 6-1 lead after the first period. Knutson started the second period with a reversal and gave up an escape before recording another takedown for an 11-2 lead with 40 seconds left in the period. Knutson added four near-fall points, and after giving up an escape, he had a takedown for an 18-3 tech fall victory.
The only other match was at 215 pounds as Roseau’s Brayvn Agre won by a pin with two seconds left in the first period and Roseau won the match 48-20.

CROOKSTON VS BGMR
Crookston was open at 107 pounds, so BGMR took a 6-0 lead. At 114 pounds, Mauricio Arriaga got a takedown for a 3-0 lead before giving up an escape and took a 3-1 lead into the second period. In the second period, Arriga scored four near-fall points with 40 seconds left in the period to take a 7-1 lead. He added three more points with a takedown for a 10-1 lead, which he took into the third period. 30 seconds into the final period, Arriaga got four more near-fall points to take a 14-1 lead and held on for a 14-2 major decision victory.
BGMR won the next five matches with two pins and three forfeits for a 30-4 lead. Gavyn Hlucny won by a forfeit at 152 pounds to spark a five-match Pirate winning streak. Lucas Perala earned the next win at 160 pounds. He took a 3-0 lead with a takedown and held the lead. Perala got an escape for a 4-0 lead, but was taken down with 50 seconds left in the match. He earned an escape for a 5-3 lead, added another escape for a 6-3 lead, and held on to win 6-4.
Jose Arriaga won by a forfeit at 172 pounds before Jaron Knutson won at 189 pounds. In Knutson’s match, there was no scoring in the first period. Jaron started the second period down and got a reversal before giving up an escape, and led 2-1 after two periods. Jaron gave up a reversal to start the third period, but countered with a reversal with 68 seconds remaining for a 4-3 lead. After giving up an escape with 47 seconds left, he scored a takedown with 16 seconds remaining and held on for a 7-4 victory.
Crookston’s Miles Corneillie won the 215-pound match by forfeit, but BGMR won the heavyweight match to win the dual 42-28.
Crookston is 2-11 in duals on the year, and a handful of wrestlers will be going to the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley tournament on Friday.
