The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team had their season come to an end on Saturday Afternoon as they fell to the Warroad Warriors by a score of 10-0 in the Section 8A Semifinals at the EGF Civic Center.
FIRST PERIOD
The first period was dominated by the Warriors in almost every fashion. They recorded the first 13 shots on goal of the period, and two of them got by Abrams. The first was on the power play on a great look by Olivia Anthony, and the second was a weird play in which Rilynn Aubol went flying into the net, and when Abrams moved out of the way to let Aubol out, the Warriors scored on that open net to make it 2-0. The offensive output for the Warriors did not decrease, as Jaylie French scored just over two minutes later to put Warroad up 3-0. Crookston then proceeded to get a few shots on goal, including a blistering slapshot by Adley Vigness, but Payton Rolli in net stopped them all for the Warriors. They would get one more goal with 3 minutes remaining in the period off a rebound from Linnea Harren, and this allowed the Warriors to take a 4-0 into the second period, while outshooting the Pirates 24-5.
SECOND PERIOD
The second period absolutely flew by with no scoring for the vast majority of it, and credit can be given to the Pirate defense and to Madi Abrams, who both vastly improved in this period. Warroad still got 18 shots on goal, but there were very few good looks for the Warriors. The Warriors did get another power play, but the Pirates successfully killed it. The Pirates didn’t get their first shot on goal of the period until there were about 9 minutes left, however, when Emma LaPlante got a breakaway, but was stuffed by Payton Rolli. The final minutes of the period became very interesting, as with 3:27 to go, the Pirates got 1:11 of 5-on-3 power play time. They recorded 5 shots on goal in that stretch, but Payton Rolli rose to the occasion and made multiple saves to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. The Warriors got the last laugh in the period, as Taylor Reese scored her second of the game with just over a minute left, and the Warriors took a 5-0 lead into the 3rd period.
