The Warroad Warriors’ freshman Doot Boucha made seven three-pointers and scored 30 points to lead his team to a 74-60 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team in a Section 8AA matchup in Warroad. Doot is the grandson of the legendary former NHL player Henry Boucha.
FIRST HALF–
The teams exchanged baskets in the first three minutes of the game as Crookston had an 8-7 lead behind two Reggie Winjum three-pointers and a Nolan Johnson basket. Warroad countered with an 8-0 run with Andrew Mayfield and Doot Boucha (grandson of Henry Boucha), and a Luke Billingsley basket for a 15-8 lead four minutes into the game. Crookston’s Carter Fee stopped the run with a three-pointer, and the teams battled back and forth. Crookston trailed 24-20 with 8 minutes left in the half when Warroad went on a 13-10 run behind Mayfield’s six points and five points from Boucha, and the Warriors led 37-20 with 4:19 to go. Crookston snapped a six-minute scoring drought with a Nolan Cassavant basket to spark a 6-0 run with baskets from Winjum and Smith to get within a 37-26 deficit with 1:15 remaining. Warroad finished the half strong and took a 45-31 lead going into halftime.
SECOND HALF–
Warroad scored the first four points of the second half with Brady Fast and Billingsley scoring baskets for a 49-31 lead. Crookston answered with baskets by Gunnar Groven and Winjum to get within a 49-35 deficit three minutes into the half. Warroad’s Boucher continued his hot shooting with a three-pointer, and after two Pirate baskets, Boucher made another three-pointer for a 55-39 Warrior lead halfway through the half. Crookston’s Nolan Cassavant made a three-pointer only to have Boucha answer with a basket. Crookston battled back and got within a 62-49 deficit after two made free throws by Fee with 6:22 left in the game. Warroad took any idea of a Pirate comeback away with a 10-0 run with four different players scoring, including the seventh three-pointer by Boucha for his 30th point of the game, and the Warriors led 72-49 with three minutes left. Crookston countered with nine straight points behind five Winjum points, and two points apiece from Johnson and Fee to get within a 72-58 deficit with 90 seconds remaining. Warroad held on to win 74-60.
.Crookston drops to 5-18 on the year and will host Kittson County Central on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Warroad improves to 14-12 on the season.
