Crookston High School Community Projects class makes tables for UMC athletic fueling station

The Crookston High School Community Projects class took on the challenge of building four high-top tables for the University of Minnesota Crookston Athletic Fueling Station.

The tables were made for the remodel of a space in the Upper Level of the UMC Athletic Center. The space will become a Nutrition Hub for the Golden Eagle Athletes.

The students had to estimate the project cost and the time required.   Then, they have to turn that estimate into reality. In that process, they have to cut, grind, weld, and paint the table frame, make adjustable feet, and make a wood top with a Golden Eagle vinyl overlay.

“We got all the metal, and we measured it out and cut it up, and then after that we cleaned up all the metal and welded it together,” said Wyatt Marsyla. “After that, we made our wood top out of plywood and then trim pieces, and then we polyed it up, and now we’re just going to add a little bit of vinyl on it.”

Makoti Webber explains what his group did. “We built all of the table from scratch, all the metal, and we had to cut it all, grind it, and weld and spray paint multiple layers. Then we built a wood top out of plywood, put some trim on, and made the feet, spray painted that,” said Weber. “It was fun being with all your friends, making a project. I had a great time doing it.”

Marsyla said it was a fun project to work on. “I learned how to use the plasma cutter, and I also learned how to, like, router stuff and stuff like that. I learned a couple of new wood-building techniques, too,” said Marsyla. “It’s cool to make something for the community and have it be out there for everyone to enjoy.”

Weber said he enjoyed welding. “My favorite part was the welding. I thought that was fun, doing all the different kinds of welds up, down, some vertical. It was pretty fun,” said Weber. “I think we’re putting our names on it, so they’ll be able to see that we made it, even if they don’t know. It’s just nice to know it’s there. And maybe I could just go visit it, see it sometime..”

The students who worked on the project are: Grant Funk, Jay Reese, Dexter Janek, Lennon Prudhomme, Miles Corniellie, Wyatt Marsala, Makoti Weber, Peter Wiersma, Tony Elbinger, Tristan Bell, Nolan Cassavant, Ashton Hoffman, Josh Hesby, Austin Thode, Ian Osland, Mario Gomez, and Isaac Michaud.
