Crookston Park Board discusses winter activity numbers, Crookston Sports Center activities, pool evaluation, and more

The Crookston Park Board met this week and discussed the winter activity numbers, a pool evaluation, the Crookston Sports Center, and more.

WINTER ACTIVITY NUMBERS
This year’s winter activity numbers were similar to last winter’s.

Figure Skating had 112 compared to 111 last year
Hockey had 195 compared to 198 last year
Learn to Skate had 50 compared to 67 last year
Mini-mites had 46 compared to 38 last year
Women’s Volleyball had nine teams, the same as last year
Co-ed turf volleyball had six teams, the same as last year

Girls Volleyball 3rd-5th grade had 19 compared to 17 last year
Girls Volleyball fifth and sixth grade had 13 compared to 11 last year
Swim Lessons this year had 93 compared to 136 last year (this year, they didn’t have December or January lessons)

Crookston Park and Rec Director Scott Butt said it was a good winter for the activities. “Very happy with the numbers. Our figure skating numbers, I thought, were really good. Our youth hockey numbers, we were happy with them. Obviously, you’d always like to increase them,” said Butt. “If you look at everything, there are some of them where the numbers are exactly the same from a year ago. So that’s nice to see.”

15U B GIRLS HOCKEY REGIONAL
The Crookston Sports Center was the host of the 15U B Girls Hockey Region tournament, with teams coming from as far away as the Twin Cities, and the tournament brought a bunch of people to town. Everything ran well. “We had teams all the way from Woodbury, Osseo/Maple Grove, and we had Hermantown, Detroit Lakes, so we had them from all over, and it was a fun tournament,” said Butt. “We got a lot of good feedback from the towns that were here and they were excited.”

CROOKSTON SPORTS CENTER CHANGES
With the end of the hockey and figure skating season, ice has been taken out of the main event arena, turf has been laid down in the Gold Arena. With the conclusion of the figure skating show on Sunday evening, we began preparing the ice by shaving this week.
Getting it taken out, hopefully we can get it dried and start putting the basketball floor down,” said Butt. “The weekend of the 20th, we have the CYBA tournament. So we got to get the basketball floors down there. If you look at the last few weeks and the next couple of weeks, we’ve had a busy time out at the CSC.”

Even though ice is out of two arenas, the Crookston Sports Center is still a busy place, especially after school. “Turf is in on the gold rink, so we needed that in right away for the high school to start baseball, softball, and golf, and even the track team was out there. We’ll still have open hockey on the blue rink, and then we’ll have the basketball courts open.”

CROOKSTON POOL EVALUATION
Crookston City Administrator Daren Selzler told the board that he had received a response from AE2S after asking for a report on repairing the pool and another report on the
cost to construct a new pool. The request to have those two reports was $30,000, which was less than the original quote to look at everything, which was good news. A 10-year-old report estimated the cost to fix the pool at $1.3 million, which is anticipated to be much higher this time around. “The recommendation from the Park Board was to try to find the money to do this last survey because we really need to be able to tell the community, hey, it’s going to cost this much to repair it or it’s going to cost this much to replace it,” said Butt. “Without actual numbers, I don’t think we should play the guessing game. I think we have to have factual numbers so that people can make a quality decision.”

SPRING/SUMMER FUN FINDER
The Crookston Park and Rec Spring/Summer Funfinder will be coming out at the end of March,
and people should be looking for it. There will be baseball/tee ball and softball registration and signup, Club Kid, tennis lessons, and many more activities to sign up for.
