Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis beats TRF in Section 8A quarterfinals

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team is taking on the Thief River Falls Prowlers in the Section 8A Boys Tennis tournament quarterfinals at Choice Fitness in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Crookston received the #2 seed, and Thief River Falls is the #7 seed.

Crookston’s Sam Widseth got things going for Crookston with an impressive shutout in his third singles match as he beat the Prowlers’ Anthony Larson 6-0, 6-0 to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead to start the match.
The next two matches completed were won by Crookston, with Ean Deleon picking up a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jaxen Larson. The second doubles team of Colton Osborn and Sawyer Anderson continued the Pirate domination as they won 6-2, 6-1 to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Crookston only needed one more victory in the four remaining matches to advance to the semi-finals.
Crookston won the next two matches at about the same time to assure themselves of a trip to the section semi-finals as the third doubles team of Jacob Halverson and Alex Zammert won a three-set battle. They won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 6-3. The Pirates bounced back with a hard-fought 6-2 victory in the third set to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead.
Another Pirate victory came at first doubles with the team of Reggie Winjum and Hudson Rick cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory for a 5-0 lead.
Thief River Falls’ Jett Cornelius, one of the top singles players in the state, picked up a win for his team as he beat Crookston’s Grant Funk 6-0, 6-0 to bring the Prowlers within a 5-1 deficit with one match remaining.
Crookston’s Gunnar Groven won the first set at second singles with a solid 6-2 score.
