The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team’s Reggie Winjum and Grant Funk won all four of their matches to win the Section 8A Doubles Tennis tournament at Choice Fitness in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Reggie Winjum and Grant Funk won their first two matches on Tuesday and won two more on Wednesday to punch their ticket to the state tournament.
First round – They beat Kameron Price/Dawson Sheridan of TRF 6-0, 6-0.
Quarterfinals – Reggie and Grant battled in the first set and came away with a hard-fought 7-5 victory. In the second set, the Pirates pulled away to beat Max Splonskowski/Damarion Moss of Detroit Lakes 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals.
Semi-finals – The Pirates cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Max Mercil/Bauer Walter of Detroit Lakes to advance to the section championship.
CHAMPIONSHIP – Reggie and Grant took on the same duo they played in the team championship match, Carter LeClair and Marshall Kopp, and lost the first set 6-4. The Pirate duo bounced back to win a back-and-forth battle in the second set 7-6. In the third set, Crookston created some room and pulled away for a 6-3 victory, advancing to the MSHSL State Individual Tennis Tournament at Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis, June 4-5.
