Red Lake County Baseball beats West Marshall and Ada-Borup-West to win West Sub-section Championship

The Red Lake County Rebels scored at least one run in each inning and pulled away for a 13-0 five-inning victory over the Marshall Fusion, then beat Ada-Borup-West 10-4 to win the West Sub-section Championship in the Section 8A Baseball tournament, played at East Grand Forks’ Stauss Park.

FIRST INNING-
West Marshall was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with three strikeouts.
Red Lake County’s Will Gieseke hit a high pop fly to third base and the ball was dropped allowing Gieseke to reach. He stole second base and after an out, came into score on a perfectly executed hit-and-run with Colin Taggart singling to left field for a 1-0 lead.

SECOND INNING-
West Marshall’s Rylan Anderson reached on an error. After an out, Sebastian Johnson reached on an error. The next two batters were retired.
Red Lake County added another run when Cain Cardinal singled
, stole second base, and scored on a Gullingsrud single for a 2-0 lead.

THIRD INNING –
The first two West Marshall batters reached on errors before the next three batters were retired.
Red Lake County broke the game open in the third inning. Gunnar Halvorson singled and stole second base before scoring on a Kegan Schmitz single for a 3-0 lead. Riley Broden was hit by a pitch before Cain Cardinal singled to score a run. Boe Nelson followed with a single and a run scored on an error for a 5-0 lead. Gieseke doubled to knock in a run and later scored on an error. Gullingsrud walked before Taggart singled to score a run and after the inning was over the Rebels led 9-0.

FOURTH INNING-
West Marshall’s Dylan Widner reached on an error before the next three batters were retired.
Red Lake County’s Riley Broden doubled with one out and moved over to third base on a passed ball. Cain Cardinal walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Boe Nelson knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly before Gieseke singled to score a run for an 11-0 lead. Gullingsrud walked and Colin Taggart singled to score two runs for a 13-0 lead.

FIFTH INNING-
West Marshall needed to score at least four runs to keep the game going. The first two batters were retired before Blair Potucek singled for the first Fusion hit of the game. The next batter struck out and Red Lake County won the game 13-0 in five innings.

Red Lake County improves to 22-2 on the year and will play the winner of Sacred Heart and Ada-Borup-West at 3:00 PM. West Marshall drops to 11-9 on the year and will play the loser of Sacred Heart/Ada-Borup-West at 5:30 PM

Red Lake County vs Ada-Borup-West
(Sub-Section Championship)

FIRST INNING-
ABW’s Ames Fassino reached on a fielder’s choice before Brandon Bueng singled and a run scored on a Connor Nelson ground out for a 1-0 lead.
RLC’s Gieseke was hit by a pitch before Gullingsrud blasted a drive over the right field fence for a two-run homerun and a 2-1 lead.

SECOND INNING
ABW was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two ground outs and a strikeout.
The first two Red Lake County batters were retired before they got a big rally going. Cardinal walked, Nelson singled and Gieseke singled to score a run. Another run scored on an error and another run scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.

THIRD INNING
ABW’s Cooper Kritzberger walked with one out before Fassino double and the Cougars had runners at second and third base. The next two batters were retired.
RLC’s Halvorson singled and Schmitz walked. Lanctot singled to load the bases when Riley Broden knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice. Another run scored on a passed ball for a 7-1 lead.

FOURTH INNING
ABW’s Luke Finney singled and Jack Jenson walked before the next two batters struck out.
RLC’s Gieseke started the inning with a singled. After an out, Taggart singled and Halvorson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Schmitz singled to score a run for an 8-1 lead.

FIFTH INNING
ABW got back into the game in the fifth inning as Kritzberger was hit by a pitch and Fassino singled. A run scored on an error before Nelson singled. A run scored on a wild pitch and another run scored on an error to bring the Cougars within an 8-4 deficit.
RLC’s Riley Broden was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After two strikeouts, Giesek doubled to left-center field to score a run. Gullingsrud singled up the middle to score a run for a 10-4 lead.

SiXTH INNING
ABW tried to get something going in the sixth inning, but the first batter struck out. After the next batter reached, the ensuing batter popped out to the short stop for the second out. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice and the Rebels got the out at second base.
RLC’s first two batters were retired before Lanctot singled up the middle. The next batter flew out to left field and RLC took a 10-4 lead into the seventh inning.

SEVENTH INNING
ABW needed at least six runs to keep the game going and Nelson had a one-out single before the next two batters were retired and Red Lake County won the game 10-4 to win the West Sub-section championship.

Red Lake County improves to 23-2 on the year and will play the winner of Bagley and Fosston on Saturday at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.
Ada-Borup-West drops to 17-5 on the year and will play in a loser-out game on Saturday at Jim Karn Field in Crookston
on Saturday.
