West Marshall beats Sacred Heart in an extra-inning thriller in the Section 8A Baseball Tourney

The Sacred Heart Eagles lost to the Ada-Borup-West Cougars and the West Marshall Fusion lost to Red Lake County, but bounced back to beat Sacred Heart 8-5 in eight innings in an elimination game to stay alive in the section 8A Baseball tournament at Stauss Park in East Grand Forks.

FIRST INNING-
Sacred Heart’s Blaine Johnson walked with one out. After a strikeout, Liam Larson singled up the middle and runners were at the corners. The next batter struck out.
After the first two ABW batters were retired, Brandon Bueng singled and Connor Nelson walked. The next batter flew out to center field.

SECOND INNING-
Sacred Heart’s Jace Motl reached on an error before the next two batters were retired.
ABW’s Mitch Finney singled with one out and after the second out, Alex Gilbertson walked. The next Cougar batter was retired.

THIRD INNING –
Sacred Heart’s Isaac Sundby reached and moved to second base on a Johnson sacrifice bunt. Nick Satterlund singled to score Sundby for a 1-0 lead.
With one out, ABW’s Brandon Bueng walked and Connor Nelson singled
. Tyler Catlett singled to score a run to tie the game at 1-1. Another run scored on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

FOURTH INNING-
The first two Sacred Heart batters were retired before Jac Motl reached on an error before the next batter was retired.
ABW added more runs in the bottom of the inning when Alex Gilbertson reached on an error and stole second base. Kritzberger singled and the next two batters walked. Two runs scored on back-to-back passed balls and another run scored on an error for a 5-1 Cougar lead.

FIFTH INNING-
Sacred Heart’s Grady Horken was hit by a pitch to start the inning. The next batter popped out before Blaine Johnson was hit by a pitch. The next two batters reached on fielder’s choices. The first one was an error at second base to load the bases. The next batter hit a ground ball to first base and the Cougars got the out at home plate. The next batter
The first two ABW batters reached on errors before the next three batters were retired.

SIXTH INNING-
Sacred Heart’s Motl singled with a chopper over the pitcher and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. The next two batters were retired.
ABW’s first two batters were retired before Catlett reached on an error, Luke Finney walked, and Peyton Eggen reached on an error and the bases were loaded. The next batter struck out and ABW took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning.

SEVENTH INNING-
The first two Sacred Heart batters were retired before Nick Satterlund singled past the third baseman.The next batter struck out and ABW won the game 5-1.

ABW improves to 17-4 on the year and will play Red Lake County in the West Subsection championship. S acred Heart drops to 14-6 and will play West Marshall at 5:30 p.m. in a loser-out game.

West Marshall vs Sacred Heart


The West Marshall Fusion scored early and broke the offense open late to beat the Sacred Heart Eagles 8-5 in eight innings to advance in the Section 8A Baseball tournament in a game played at Stauss Park in East Grand Forks on Thursday.

FIRST INNING
West Marshall started the game with a one-out Blair Potucek single, and he later came around to score. The Fusion added another run for a 2-0 lead.
Sacred Heart’s Isaac Sundby led off with a single and a stolen base before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Blaine Johnson and Nick Satterlund walked to load the bases. The next batter struck out before the next batter hit a ground ball to the shortstop (Ryan Swanson), who stepped on second base to get the out and threw to first base to convert a double play to get out of a huge jam.

SECOND INNING
West Marshall’s first two batters were retired before Shay Setterholm walked. The next batter was retired.
Sacred Heart’s Jace Motl reached on an error with one out, but the next two batters were retired.

THIRD INNING
West Marshall was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Sacred Heart’s Sundby reached on an error, A sacrifice bunt moved him to second base, and a groundout got him over to third base.
Liam Larson was hit by a pitch and Micah Zavoral laced a line drive into centerfield to score two runs and tie the game at 2-2.

FOURTH INNING
West Marshall was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Sacred Heart’s Motl singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Grady Horken singled and the Eagles had runners at the corners. Sundby grounded out and a run scored for a 3-2 lead.

FIFTH INNING
West Marshall’s Owen Widner led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a Shay Setterholm sacrifice bunt. Swanson reached on an error, and a run scored on a Potucek sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3.
Sacred Heart’s Larson walked with one out, but the next two batters were retired.

SIXTH INNING
West Marshall’s Dylan Widner singled with one out, but the next two batters were retired.
Sacred Heart was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

SEVENTH INNING
The first two West Marshall batters were retired before they put a big two-out rally together. Swanson got it going with a walk, Potucek singled, and Wes Olson knocked in two runs with a single for a 5-3 lead.
West Marshall’s Johnson singled with one out, and after the second out of the inning, Larson singled before Micah and Asher Zavoral singled in one run each to tie the game at 5-5, forcing extra innings.

EIGHTH INNING
West Marshall’s Dylan Widner led off the inning with a walk, and Sacred Heart made a pitching change due to the pitch count. After a groundout, Reid Rivard blooped a single into shallow centerfield to score a run for a 6-5 lead. Owen Widner singled, and Shay Setterholm reached on a fielder’s choice, and there were two outs. Swanson crushed a line drive down the left field line to score two runs to give the Fusion an 8-5 lead.

West Marshall brought in Ethan Ellerbush to pitch the eighth inning, and he retired Sacred Heart in 1-2-3 fashion with two strikeouts and a ground out to first base, and West Marshall won 8-5.

West Marshall improves to 12-9 on the year and will play Fosston on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Jim Karn Field in Crookston. Sacred Heart’s season comes to an end with a record of 14-7 on the year.
