Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis’ Reggie Winjum and Grant Funk competed in the Minnesota State Class A Boys Tennis doubles tournament at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
THURSDAY-
Winjum and Funk took on Enzo Petto and Grey Macmillan of the Breck School and had a great battle in the first set with the Pirates taking a 4-0 lead, but Petto and Macmillan finihsed strong to win the set 6-4. In the second set, Petto and Macmillan pulled away to win the second set 6-2 and won the match.
In the consolation semi-finals, the boys played Aidan Raddohl and Luke Brandt of Totino Grace, who lost to the top seed in the first round. Winjum and Funk started the match on a good note with a back-and-forth battle and came up with some great points to win the first set 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker). In the second set, the Pirates lost 6-2. Since it is a consolation match, they don’t play a full third set. Instead, they play a super-tiebreaker, and Winjum and Funk won 10-6 to win the match to advance to the State Consolation semifinals.
FRIDAY-
Winjum and Funk took on Mathias Bruning and Josh Blomberg of Litchfield in the consolation semi-finals. Winjum and Funk lost the first set 6-1. In the second set, the Pirates took a 3-0 lead. Litchfield bounced back to take a 4-3 lead, but Winjum and Funk settled down and won the next two games to take a 5-4 lead. Litchfield won the next three games to win the set 7-5 and win the match.
Winjum and Funk’s season comes to an end with the loss.
