SPORTS FEEVER – August 20, 2026

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

This week’s column is a little short due to me being on vacation. I am taking the week off to get some R and R and visit somewhere I haven’t been before. I will give you one tip. HEEEEEYYYYYYY YOOOOOOUUUUU GUUUUYYYYYSSSSS!

— — — — —

Happy first week of Fall Sports in Minnesota to all who celebrate!! The first competition of the season is already on Friday, when Girls Tennis can play the first match of the season and several teams are taking advantage of the date, including Crookston.

— — — —

I have been told that the Roseau Rams high school hockey teams will continue to opt up to play AA hockey for the next two years. I am not sure what they are thinking. I guess getting destroyed in the section tournament by Moorhead is fun! I guess they are still scared of Warroad????

— — — — —

It was cool to see Minnesota State Moorhead’s Jake Strand play in his first NFL Exhibition game last weekend for Atlanta. He completed 6 of 12 passes for 50 yards and had a rushing touchdown. While it won’t count on his official records, it was still pretty cool for a kid from the NSIC!

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Men’s Cross Country team was picked to finish seventh of 15 teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday morning. They received just one less point than sixth place Winona State.

Augustana was picked to finish first in the NSIC, receiving 14 first place votes and 196 points. MSU Moorhead was selected for the second place finish, receiving one first place vote and 182 points.

Steven Krouse is entering his eighth year as the head coach of the program.

Riley Hanson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) has been tabbed as the Golden Eagles’ Athlete to Watch this season. Hanson finished 49th amongst all NSIC cross country athletes in 2025 and 102nd in the Central Region. Steve Krouse said: “When Riley and his brother Zach committed here, we were coming off a last place finish in the NSIC. Riley took a chance on us and throughout his career helped the team rise all the way into the top five. Riley shows up to practice every day with a competitive mindset and leads his teammates by example. Following another summer of hard work, I am looking forward to seeing what Riley is able to accomplish his senior year!”

The Golden Eagles have some returners this season, with Riley’s brother Zach Hanson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) and Lane Hoefs (Sr., Wadena, Minn.) coming back for one more season. Coach Krouse on those returners and the team as a whole said:

The Golden Eagles will open the season at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 9:15 p.m.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Women’s Cross Country team was picked to finish seventh of 16 teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday morning.

Winona State was picked to win the conference, garnering 11 first place votes and 219 points. Minnesota State was picked to finish second with one first place vote and 202 points, with Augustana picked to finish third, receiving three first place votes and 201 points.

Steven Krouse is entering his eighth year as the head coach of the program.

The Golden Eagles have some key returners this upcoming season, with Grace Alwardt (Sr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Emma Williams (Sr., Nashwauk, Minn.)Head Coach Steve Krouse had this to say about the team, as well as Alwardt and Williams: “Our women’s team set a school record for highest placement at the NSIC Championship meet in 2025. The team looks to build on that success as we only lost one runner to graduation and added six talented freshmen. Our two seniors Emma Williams and Grace Alwardt have great leadership qualities and lead by example. Both have been instrumental in getting our program to where it is today. I am excited to watch them and the rest of the team compete and continue to reach new heights this season!”

Morgan Shaw (Sr., Redmond, Ore.), who was tabbed as the Athlete to Watch for the Golden Eagles, is coming off of a spectacular season for the Golden Eagles. She finished 2025 as the 52nd ranked runner in both the NSIC and the Central Region. She will now look to build off of those numbers in 2026.

JOKES

On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the students, pointing out some of the rules:

“The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all male students, and the male dormitory to the female students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time.”

He continued, “Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180. Are there any questions?”

At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired: “How much for a season pass?”
