CROOKSTON PIRATE BOY’S SOCCER SHUTOUT BY GRAND FORKS RED RIVER

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer team was scheduled to take on Grand Forks Red River’s varsity soccer team on Friday afternoon but ended up taking on the Red River JV team and losing 6-0 in a Non-Section game played in Grand Forks.

Grand Forks Red River’s JV team did not have a roster available online, and their coach did not respond to a request for a roster. Red River opened the scoring in the 16th minute taking a 1-0 lead. The Roughriders doubled their lead before halftime with a goal in the 32nd minute. “We have not played in a wind like that before,” explained Crookston head coach Lon Boike. “It was kind of a curvy wind. In the first half, we played with the wind. It was difficult for both teams to play that way. I thought we played pretty well through the first fifteen minutes. We were just really flat. The whole match we were really pretty flat and I think that’s just because we were pretty tired. We didn’t communicate as well and we weren’t passing as well as we could have.”

In the second half, Grand Forks Red River scored 14 minutes after halftime taking a 3-0 lead. The Roughriders converted a penalty kick 56:00 into the match pulling ahead 4-0. In the 60th minute, Red River added to their lead with another goal before capping off the scoring in the 62nd minute to close out the 6-0 win. “We must have gotten pretty tired and the JV match was going on at the same time so we didn’t have a lot of subs,” summarized Boike. “I think we were just a little worn out. The Red River team played well. They had some good looks and they snuck behind our defense on a couple of occasions and got some goals. Obviously, I’m disappointed that we got beat, but on the other hand, I’m thinking this is our third match in four days and we’ve been playing in some pretty hot weather the past couple of days. Our guys are truly tired after that. They tried and gave it their best effort and that’s all they can ask for.”

Crookston falls to 0-10 on the season. The Pirates return to the pitch on Tuesday when they travel to Fergus Falls to take on Fergus Falls Hillcrest at 4:00 P.M.
