The Crookston Pirates boys’ soccer team were no mtach for the Hillcrest Academy Comets on Saturday morning, as they gave up 25 shots on goal and 15 corner kicks en route to a 13-0 loss at KROX Radio Stadium.
FIRST HALF –
As soon as the first ball was kicked, the Comets took control, pushing forward and getting four corner kicks in the first two and a half minutes. The fourth one culminated in a goal by Christopher Thorbjornsen, putting the Comets up 1-0. That would open the floodgates for them, as the offense would continue to get looks on runs and odd-number rushes. Once they took a 2-0 lead, Joakim Fosse then scored two goals in 45 seconds to quickly put the Comets up 4-0. Hillcrest ended up scoring three more goals in the half to take a 7-0 lead, but the lead could’ve been more if not for Colton Osborn. He made nine saves in the half, most of which being of high difficulty, and he was aggressive as well when he was able to disrupt plays. The Pirate offense was unable to get anything going, though, as they were held without a shot on goal in the half.
SECOND HALF –
The second half played out more of the same as the first half, with a running clock after goals scored. Hillcrest boosted themselves up to a double-digit advantage with three goals in 3:33, allowing them to go up 10-0. The Pirate defense was playing better, getting clears a lot more often and allowing less shots on goal, but the shots the Comets were getting were finding the back of the net, as with 12 minutes to go, Hillcrest had taken a 13-0 lead. The Pirates got their only shot on goal at that point, as Aaron Gosse fired a free kick that was saved by William Selvig. Crookston got one corner kick a few minutes later, but nothing came of it, and Hillcrest was able to cruise to a 13-0 victory.
Crookston drops to 1-7 on the season, while Hillcrest Academy improves to 8-2.
