The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team continued their success in first singles and third doubles but could not squeak out a win anywhere and fell to the East Grand Forks Green Wave by a score of 5-2 on Monday.
CROOKSTON vs EAST GRAND FORKS
Crookston shifted their lineup slightly from the norm in this match, with mixed results. One constant was Lauren Tull in first singles; she had her work cut out for her against Chloe Svendsend, and after Tull won the first set, she won the second set in a tiebreak, taking the match 6-4, 7-6. The rest of the Pirate singles players were not as fortunate in their matches, as Ella Capistran in second singles, Brigit Groven in third singles and Haddie Halland in fourth singles all lost in straight sets.
In doubles, matches were must closer. The first doubles pair of Nora Groven and Kaylen Bedard were locked in an incredible match; The Pirate duo won the first set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 8-6, but the Green Wave duo of Emmy Robles and Madi Wallace came back to win the second set 6-2 and the super tiebreak 10-4. Third doubles was another wild match; Teagan Fanfulik and Catelyn Maruska lost the first set 0-6 but had an incredible turnaround, winning the second set 7-5 and winning an insane super tiebreak 10-8 to take the match. “Pirate head coach Brianne Ellison complimented the mental fortitude of Fanfulik and Maruska. “It was a big mindset game for those two… heart rate elevated for sure, but they kept fighting.” Unfortunately, the Pirate second doubles pair of Avery Mathews and Sylvia Christensen lost in straight sets, and EGF held on to win the day 5-2.
Pirate head coach Brianne Ellison saw a lot of good things throughout the day. “Today went well,” said Ellison, “They are starting to figure out good plays to make on the court and it’s really fun to watch them be more creative with the placement of the balls.”
Crookston is now 8-15 on the season.
