Crookston’s Emma Borowicz and Catherine Tiedemann lost both of their matches at the Minnesota State Girls Tennis Individual tournament held at Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
FIRST ROUND –
The Pirates had a slow start and that hurt them in a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Danielle Thorfinnson-Alissa Thorfinnson (Minnewaska) in the first round “It was similar to last year with a slow start,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “Give credit to the pair from Minnewaska Area because they played well.” Borowicz and Tiedemann recovered after the first set and came out strong in the second set taking a 4-1 lead. “That is what I expected from the girls, in the second set. To come out strong and they were hitting the ball well and Minnewaska was starting to make some errors,” said Coach Brekken. The Thorfinnson duo picked up their play a bit and stormed back to win the set 7-5 and the match. “The Minnewaska team were both about six feet tall and hit well and could get to our shots. They were a very good team,” said Coach Brekken. “I was proud of how the girls battled back after the slow start and hopefully that will carry over into the next match.
CONSOLATION ROUND –
Borowicz and Tiedemann lost their consolation match 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 to Neriah Lara and Vaida Behnke (Litchfield) in the consolation round and were eliminated.
Crookston lost the first set 6-3. “We started slow again, kind of like the first match,” said Brekken. Tiedemann and Borowicz jumped out to a 4-1. After their opponents cut the lead to 4-3 they bounced back to finish strong to win the final two games to win the set. “We started off playing really good,” said Coach Brekken. “We hit a bit of a bump in the middle before they finished strong to win the set.” In the consolation rounds at the state tournament, the third set is not a full set, it is played as a tie-breaker to speed up the matches. In the tie-breaker, Crookston took a 4-1 lead before their opponents stormed back to take a 7-5 lead. Tiedemann and Borowicz tied the tie-breaker up at 8-8 before losing the next two points and lost 10-8. “They were hitting good shots in the tie-breaker and playing well,” said Coach Brekken. “The girls played two very good teams and played good tennis. I couldn’t be more proud and they played well all season.”
Borowicz and Tiedemann went 7-5 on the year as a pair with a loss to Hibbing, two losses to Lund and Nelson of Thief River Falls and the two losses at state.
Tiedemann was 15-8 in singles and 8-5 in doubles this year. Borowicz was 2-2 in singles and 10-10 in doubles.
