The West Marshall Fusion take on the Ada-Borup-West Cougars in the second round of the Section 8A Baseball tournament in Ada at 12:30 p.m. today.
FIRST INNING
Ada-Borup-West’s Cameron Spaeth led off the game with a walk and Trent Sip was hit by a pitch. A run scored on an error for a 1-0 lead before Austin McCraven doubled to score another run and the Cougars led 2-0.
West Marshall was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.
SECOND INNING
ABW’s Ames Fassino led off the inning with a single, Casper Kritzberger was hit by a pitch before Spaeth singled to score a run for a 3-0 lead. Trent Sip walked to load the bases and Austin McCraven walked to score another run for a 4-0 lead.
West Marshall led off the bottom of the inning with their first hit of the game when Aiden Anderson singled. But the next batter hit into a double play. The next batter flew out and the threat was over.
THIRD INNING
Ada-Borup-West only sent three batters to the plate in the top of the inning.
West Marshall’s Nick Winge was hit by a pitch and Dylan Widner walked with one out. The next two batters were retired and ABW held on to a 4-0 lead.
FOURTH INNING
ABW was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
West Marshall’s Anderson recorded his second hit of the game with one out and after a strikeout, Jackson Woinarowicz walked before the next batter struck out and ABW led 4-0.
FIFTH INNING
ABW had a two-out single, but the next batter struck out.
West Marshall finally got on the board when Widner singled and Jackson Kekke singled to score a run to get within a 4-1 deficit.
SIXTH INNING
ABW’s Fassino led off the inning with a single, but the next three batters were retired.
West Marshall had a baserunner in the bottom of the inning after Woinarowicz was hit by a pitch with two outs, but the next batter grounded out and ABW took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning.
SEVENTH INNING
ABW was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning.
West Marshall needed three runs to tie and four to win in the bottom of the inning and they had a great start with Nick Winge getting hit by a pitch. After an out, Will McGlynn reached on an error and Kekke singled to score two runs to bring the Fusion within a 4-3 defict. Demetrius Oberg singled and after an out Safranski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter struck out and ABW held on for a 4-3 victory.
Ada-Borup=West improves to 12-5 on the year and will play Sacred Heart in the winners bracket. West Marshall drops to 14-6 on the year and will play Red Lake County in a loser out game at 5:30 p.m.
