Allen S. Thronson – OBIT

Allen S. Thronson, 97, Ada, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Benedictine Care Community in Ada.

Allen was born May 24, 1926, in Strand Township near Gary, MN. He was the second of four children born to Carl Alfred and Sophie (Ellingson) Thronson. Allen attended rural schools and graduated from Gary High School, Gary, MN, Class of 1944.

Allen met Shirley, the love of his life, while working on her family’s farm. They married on December 21, 1952, and raised five children in Ada, MN, where he started working at Ada Grain Company, later known as Con Agra in 1954 and retired as Assistant Manager in 1991.

As a long-time active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ada, he served as an usher and head usher for many years along with other church functions and was active in the local Cursillio organization at Grace Lutheran as well. 

Allen was a member of the Ada Rod and Gun club, involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Ada Jaycees, and bowling league. He was very active in the community in many other ways and enjoyed socializing with relatives and friends in his spare time.

He was a devoted, caring, family man who loved his family. He worked many part time jobs while employed at Ada Grain, and following retirement include working for Burton and Neil Rockstad and other local farmers, numerous local businesses doing snow removal in the winter, Meals on Wheels, Fredrikson-Ganje-Funeral Home, transporting people to medical appointments, and lending a helping hand to many people. Allen also enjoyed carpentry work and helped when he could with various building projects. People would often come to Allen seeking help in dealing with issues they were having, appreciating the advice he would give.

Allen is reunited in heaven with Shirley; their son, Kelly; his parents; siblings, Ordale, Eunice, and Marilyn; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Allen is survived by his children, Bruce Thronson, The Villages, Lady Lake, FL, Bryan Thronson, Ada, MN, Lori Tuhey, Thief River Falls, MN, and Dawn (Dale) Moore, Detroit Lakes, MN; grandchildren, Tony Kappes, DeAnn Hobbs, Jerod Kappes, Britney (Trevor) Haugh, Bryce Thronson, Amanda (Eric) Turner, and Justin (Carlie) Moore, and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, Benedictine Care Community, Ada, and St. Jude Hospital. 

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Friday, May 3, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, MN.  

Visitation: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Fredrikson-Ganje Funeral Home, Ada, MN. 

Interment: Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.
