ALTRU TO OFFER FREE PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING IN GRAND FORKS OCTOBER 1

Altru encourages all men ages 55-69, with no other risk factors, to get screened for prostate cancer. Altru will host a prostate cancer screening event on Tuesday, October 1, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Altru Professional Center, 4440 South Columbia Road. Individuals must call 701-780-5396 for an appointment. Screening is free of charge.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men and is the second leading killer (behind lung cancer). Prostate cancer screening includes a PSA (protein-specific antigen) blood test and DRE (digital rectal exam). PSA, produced by the prostate gland, is a protein detected in the blood. PSA may be an indicator of an enlarged prostate, an infection of the prostate, or perhaps cancer. A PSA blood level test is the best option for early detection of prostate cancer because it states whether an individual need further testing. Risk factors for prostate cancer include family history, age, and racial/ethnic background as well as lifestyle factors.

Individuals will need to call for an appointment at 701-780-5396 to determine if they fit within screening guidelines which include:

1. Men 55-69 years of age.
2. Not a current urology patient.
