Athlete of the Week – Abby Borowicz

This Week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball player Abby Borowicz. The senior has played a big role for the Pirates the past couple of seasons and is flourishing in her last year on the court. “First thing that comes to mind with Abby is basketball intelligence,” said Pirates Girl’s Basketball Coach Darin Zimmerman. “She is a really smart basketball player and that shows up in big plays that she makes but it also shows up in all the little plays she makes throughout a game that people may not see.”

This year, Borowicz is making more and more big plays. In the Pirates most recent game last night against Park Rapids, Borowicz led the way with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Crookston upset the #1 ranked team in Class A earlier this year, the Hancock Owls, and again it was Borowicz scoring the last four points of the game, including the game-winner with just 3.3 seconds remaining.

If Crookston is to make a run this year towards a Section Championship, Borowicz will be a big part of the team’s success, and both she and her head coach want to make sure they have no regrets when the season is over. “I think it will just be important no matter how we end that we are content,” said Borowicz. “If we play as hard as we can and have no regrets then we can know we did our best and left it all out there.” Coach Zimmerman would add “I think we can definitely be in the conversation and battling for a Section Championship at the end of the year,” said coach Zimmerman. “We have some improving to do but it’s certainly a realistic goal and as Abby said, let’s just leave it all out there and give ourselves a chance to do something special.”

Outside of basketball, Borowicz also plays Tennis and has been an active member of the CHS Leo Club, and Student Council for the past three years.
