ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Crookston Pirate State-bound Wrestlers

Carter Coauette, Hunter Knutson, Ethan Boll, Ethan Bowman, and Zach Brown

The KROX Athletes of the week are Carter Coauette, a 106-pound 8th grader, Ethan Bowman, a 113-pound freshman, Zach Brown, a 120-pound Junior, Hunter Knutson, a 145-pound freshman, and Ethan Boll, a 182-pound freshman who will all be competing for the Crookston Pirate Wrestling team in the State Individual Tournament beginning this Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Crookston’s five wrestlers competing at the State Tournament is one shy of the school record six that competed at State in 2011.

Carter Coauette enters his first State Tournament with a 28-10 record. Coauette earned his spot at State after winning a true-second place match in the Section 8A individual tournament over Jaxon Janousek of BGMR 12-2. Coauette will be the 11-seed at 106-pounds. “Carter has won a number of big matches in his young career but none bigger than his true second match last Saturday to solidify a trip to state,” said Crookston Wrestling coach Wes Hanson. “He wrestles an aggressive style but also has solid defense which makes him effective on the mat.”

Ethan Bowman heads to his first State Tournament with a 35-9 record. Bowman earned his spot at State with a second-place finish in the Section 8A individual tournament after defeating third-place finisher Keegan Senger of Fosston-Bagley in the semifinals 11-1. Bowman will be the 16-seed at 113-pounds. Bowman enters the State tournament with 66 career wins. “Ethan is very crafty and opportunistic on the mat,” noted Hanson. “He is very deserving of this trip to state.”

Zach Brown returns to the State Tournament for the third straight year after placing fourth at the State Tournament in 2019. Brown is 32-9 this season and won the Section 8A title at 120-pounds defeating Christian Carlson of Frazee 7-4 in the championship match. Brown earned the 4th-seed in the State Tournament bracket. Brown enters the State tournament with 134 career wins. “Zach is wrestling extremely well at the right time,” explained Hanson. “Being a three-time section champion is quite a feat and I’m excited to coach him while in pursuit of his ultimate goal.”

Hunter Knutson enters his first State Tournament with a 22-20 record. Knutson won the Section 8A title at 145 pounds after beating Hank Tellers of United North Central 6-5 clinching a trip to State. Knutson will be the 15-seed at 145-pounds. “Hunter is peaking at the right time and it showed here last weekend with him earning the section title,” said Hanson. “The ride out for the win in the finals was a moment we’ll never forget.”

Ethan Boll heads to his first State Tournament with a. 36-5 record. Boll clinched a spot at State with his semifinal victory over third-place finisher Nathan Waage of BGMR by pin in 1:55. Boll will be the 12-seed at 182-pounds. Boll enters the state tournament with 82 career wins. “Ethan has had a tremendous season so far and we look forward to seeing what he can do at the state level,” added Hanson.”

All five wrestlers begin their journey towards a state title on Friday in St. Paul with the first round scheduled to begin at 9 AM Friday and continuing through Saturday evening with live wrestling reports from the state tournament throughout the championship on KROX.
