Athlete of the Week – Garrett Fischer

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate Boy’s Golfer Garrett Fischer. The freshman has led the Pirates all season being their top scorer and has taken tremendous strides at improving his game.

A highlight for Fischer this year was breaking 80 for the first time and shooting a 79 at Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls. Earlier this week he did it again shooting a 75 at Minakwa Golf Club in Crookston which was good for a 4th place finish individually in the Crookston Invitational. Fischer loves the sport and has been playing golf for as long as he can remember. “Golf is a tough sport,” said Fischer. “I love challenging myself and that’s what I love about the game.”

According to his coach, he spends countless hours on his game and has continued to develop. “Garrett definitely hits the ball further than he use to and you can see his game starting to mature,” said Pirates coach Steve Kofoed. “He still has a long way to go, but you can see the growth and he’s starting to unlock more of his game each round this year. As he continues to do that he will eventually get to a point where he can go to any golf course and score well and possibly medal. He plays a ton of golf and it’s been fun to watch him grow.”

For Fischer, he does have his sights set high for himself this year, but also for the Pirates as a team. “A personal goal for myself this year is to make the State Tournament,” said Fischer. “I also think we can advance out of Sub-Sections this year as a team.”

Outside of staying in the lush fairways during the spring, Fischer also plays hockey for the Pirates to keep busy.
