The College of Saint Scholastica Athletic Director and Recreation, Jessica Cherry, announced the hire of Austin Sommerfeld as the new Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications. Sommerfeld started his role on December 12.
“I am grateful to have someone with Austin’s strong foundation, wealth, and breadth of experiences join the CSS team as we move into creating masterful experiences for our student-athletes,” said Cherry.
“I am very excited about this new opportunity that I have at CSS,” said Sommerfeld. “I would like to thank CSS Athletic Director and Recreation Jessica Cherry and the whole Athletics staff for making me feel welcome during the interview process and my first few days here. I am eager to help elevate the successes of the student-athletes and athletic programs here at CSS.”
Sommerfeld comes from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he handled communications efforts for the Alumni Relations Department. Over the past three years, Sommerfeld improved brand consistency, social media presence, redesigned their e-newsletter, and was a crucial part of creating virtual programs for the alumni department. Prior to UMD, Sommerfeld worked for the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles as a student intern in the athletic communications department. He played a variety of roles from 2017 to 2019. He first started assisting in game day operations and fan experience for the football program and began serving as the play-by-play announcer for Golden Eagle home athletic events. Sommerfeld also became involved in creating graphics for social media, updating the website, assisting with live streaming, writing game previews for softball games, and producing a recap show for men’s and women’s basketball.
The Crookston native holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication from UMC (2019). He and his wife, Peyton reside in Duluth.
