BAGLEY-FOSSTON BEATS PIRATE BOY’S HOCKEY IN OVERTIME FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON

The Crookston Pirates Boy’s Hockey team traveled to Bagley on Thursday night to battle the Bagley-Fosston Flyers. For the second time this year, the Flyers would beat the Pirates in overtime on a game-winning goal by Breckin Levin, to win the game 4-3.

FIRST PERIOD –
The Pirates had revenge on their mind right from the drop of the puck and came out playing excellent hockey. 4:02 into the game the Pirates would strike first with Jack Doda deflecting a puck in front of the net to beat the Flyers goaltender Kassandra Fontaine making it 1-0. Teagen Lubinski and Tate Hamre would be credited with assists on the goal. A little over two minutes later, the Pirates would get the puck in deep near the net and Kadin Edwards would jam a puck home for his first goal of the season making it 2-0 Crookston. Michael Bochow and Nathan Kelly would be given assists for the goal. Crookston looked as if they were going to cruise into the second period with a 2-0 lead, but Jack Doda would be called on a late penalty for interference giving the Flyers the first Power Play of the game. Bagley-Fosston would capitalize and score with just eight seconds remaining in the period on a goal from Markus Olson who scored the OT game-winner the last time the two teams met. That would give Crookston a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. The Pirates controlled the frame outshooting the Flyers 11-6 and before the Power Play, Bagley-Fosston managed just 2 shots on goal.

SECOND PERIOD –
The start of the middle frame was a little slow with neither team’s offense getting much going. That changed at the 4:56 mark when the Flyers would be called for a penalty giving Crookston their first Power Play of the night. The Power Play has been an area of concern for the Pirates and they would fail to do much with this chance and Bagley-Fosston would get back to full strength. Shortly after however, Crookston would score again on a beautiful shot by freshman Tate Hamre from the point that went top right corner past the Flyers goaltender giving Crookston a 3-1 edge. Jackson Reese would be credited with an assist. Bagley-Fosston would counter and score at the 12:17 mark of the frame on a goal from Brecken Levin. Levin would miss on his first try, but a second effort in front of the net would pay off as the puck squeaked by Bailey cutting the Pirates lead to 3-2. Not more than a minute later, another Flyers penalty gave Crookston a chance to get the goal back. The Pirates Power Play struggles continued as they failed to score, and each team had a few more chances in the period before it eventually came to an end with Crookston in front 3-2 heading into the final frame. The Pirates outshot the Flyers through the first two periods 18-12.

THIRD PERIOD –
It took just 0:42 into the final period for the Pirates to get another Power Play with Bagley-Fosston being called for another elbowing. Crookston would be unable to score, and the Flyers applied some pressure the next several minutes but Jaren Bailey was able to make some nice saves to keep the Pirates in front 3-2. at the 6:06 mark, the Pirates would get their fourth Power Play of the game, but yet again, they were unable to extend the lead, and shortly after, Kadin Edwards would be called for roughing giving Bagley-Fosston the man advantage. This time the Pirates Penalty Kill stepped up and was able to preserve the lead with a strong two-minute kill. It took all the way under 3:00 remaining in the game, but the Flyers were able to get the equalizing goal, as Brecken Levin would be behind the Pirates net, and fire a pass off of Jaren Bailey who was caught out of the crease. The puck would deflect off of Bailey and into the back of the net tying the game at 3-3 with just 2:05 remaining. Each team got one more shot on goal but the game would head into overtime.

OT –
It took just a minute into the overtime for the Flyers to move down the ice and get a good look on net. Ryan Street had no choice but to trip the Flyers player, resulting in a penalty and giving Bagley-Fosston a Power Play. Brecken Levin would move in, and complete the hat trick on a wrist shot that beat Bailey stick side, giving the Flyers the 4-3 win 1:24 into overtime. It was the second time this year that Bagley-Fosston beat Crookston in overtime.

Crookston falls to 2-13 and will host Little Falls this Saturday from the Crookston Sports Center. Bagley-Fosston moves to 11-5 with the win.
