Doris Bernice Brogren – Obit

Doris Bernice Brogren, age 101, of Ulen, MN, died Friday, November 26, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

Doris Bernice Fagerlie was born August 18, 1920 to parents, Oscar and Margrethe (Valtinson) Fagerlie. Bernice was a full-time homemaker for her busy household of 6 children. She was strong in her Lutheran faith and was always helping other people.  She served her community by volunteering at church (both Salem and Atlanta), and the nursing home in Ulen. In retirement, she and Ken spent time traveling to visit family and friends. Bernice spent a lot of time tending to a huge flower and vegetable garden every year.  When she wasn’t helping Ken tend to the garden, Bernice could be found sewing one of her many beautiful quilts. She took pride in each one she sewed, and not a single piece of fabric went to waste. They will be enjoyed by her kids, grandkids, and many others for years to come.

Bernice was always keeping her hands busy. Along with sewing, Bernice was an expert at making lefsa. A Brogren holiday wasn’t complete without a plate of her famous Norwegian treat. She took pride in her heritage and often reminded her family that she was “a tough old Norwegian!”  She was happy when her family was visiting and enjoyed playing games. Countless games of Yahtzee were played around her kitchen table over the years. She was truly the matriarch of her family, and her greatest joy was watching her family grow. She will be forever cherished and loved by all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice is survived by her children: Ken (Carolyn) Jr of Ulen, Son-in-law, Steve (Gloria) Kent of West Fargo, ND, Janice Hardesty of Brainard, MN, Lynette Hellum of Ulen, Valerie (Rand) Alland of Ogema, MN, and Carol (Jonn) Rikhus of Ulen; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; daughter, Barbara Kent; son-in-law, Ross Hardesty; granddaughter, Jeanette; a great-great-granddaughter, Emily; and 8 siblings.

A public funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Audubon Cemetery, Audubon, MN. For those in attendance, a mask is strongly encouraged.

Please feel free to sign the guestbook, send condolences and view other opportunities which may be available to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
