BETTY UELAND – OBIT

Betty Ueland, age 88, of Fertile, MN, passed away peacefully at home on March 10, 2024, with her family at her side.

Betty Arlene Haugen was born on November 11, 1935, to Helmer and Bergliot (Pederson) Haugen at home on the farm, minutes before her twin sister, Beverly. She grew up in a family of eight children and graduated from Fertile High School with the class of 1953. After graduation, she attended Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND while working at deLendrecie’s Department Store. On June 18, 1955, she was united in marriage to Erman Ueland at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile. Erman and Betty raised their three children, Kim, Lori, and Jon in Fertile. While raising her children, she also worked as a farm business management secretary at Fertile School and managed a senior citizen’s program for the City of Fertile. Following this, Erman and Betty opened and operated the Home and Family Center clothing store. After her children were grown, Betty became the church secretary at Concordia, a position she would hold for 25 years.

Betty was very active in Concordia Lutheran Church’s activities: she hosted and took part in many Circle Meetings, Bible studies, ran the food shelf for a time, taught Sunday School, and sang in the church choir for many years. She also volunteered at the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center, delivered Meals on Wheels, and did hair care at Fair Meadow Nursing Home. Her legacy of service and care for her family and community will be remembered by all who knew her.

Betty is survived by her husband of 68 years, Erman; daughter, Kim (Harry) Kveno, Gary, MN; son, Jon (Kathy) Ueland, Gig Harbor, WA; son-in-law, Ron Hoyum, Poulsbo, WA; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard (Elizabeth) Haugen, Fertile, MN; two sisters, Yvonne Nelson, Grand Forks, ND, and Lois Bauer, Fertile, MN; sister-in-law, Irmy Haugen, Warren, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lori Hoyum; siblings, Luverne (Bill) Swanson, Gene (Irene) Haugen, Myron Haugen, and Beverly (David) Duckstad; brothers-in-law, Lyle Nelson and Dale Bauer; and parents-in-law, Art and Cora Ueland.

Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Erikson-Vik-Ganje Funeral Home, Fertile, MN.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Inurnment: Concordia South Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
