The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team won the first five matches, but the Badger-Greenbush-Middle River Gators won seven of the last nine matches to win a thrilling 39-34 match in a Section 8A dual at the “Swamp” in Greenbush.
Zach Brown had a big win at 120 pounds by a 3-1 decision for his 125th career victory.
Crookston’s Carter Coauette got things started with a 6-1 decision for a 3-0 lead. “He had his opponent on his back for a long time and was close to getting a pin, but on the road, they are a little harder to get,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson.
Ethan Bowman followed with a pin in the second period at 113 pounds. “He was explosive with his attacks and had a nice move to pick up a pin, and it was a nice match for Ethan,” said Coach Hanson.
Zach Brown won a 3-1 decision at 120 pounds to give the Pirates a 12-0 lead, and it was his 125th career victory. “He got the first takedown and wrestled a good match,” said Coach Hanson. “Congrats to him on his 125th victory, and to do it over a kid that has made a trip or two down to state is great.”
Nolan Dans kept the Pirate run going with an 11-2 major decision at 126 pounds before Cameron Weiland won by a forfeit at 132 pounds to give Crookston a 22-0 lead. “Nolan was up 4-0 going into the third period, and extending his lead was huge,” said Coach Hanson. “We got out to an early lead, and the guys were doing some nice things. We knew winning those first matches was going to be huge, and we were looking for bonus points.”
BGMR won their first match in a thriller with Garrett Undeberg beating Crookston’s Braxton Volker 11-9. “Braxton had the lead until late in the third and gave up a big move, and it was a tough one for us there,” said Coach Hanson.
The Pirates responded with another win when Cameron Hulst got a pin in the first period for a 28-3 lead with seven matches left. “Cam was trailing early in the match and then had a nice hip toss and was able to pick up that, and that was huge,” said Coach Hanson.
BGMR won the next three matches by pins.
Crookston’s Ethan Boll stopped the Gator run with a win by pin in 14 seconds for a 34-21 lead. “That extended our lead and was a big win,” said Coach Hanson.
BGMR won the 195-pound match by pin, the 220 match by forfeit, and they won the heavyweight match by a pin late in the second period to come from behind to win 39-34. “We won seven matches, they won seven matches, and we lost a couple of close ones and having it be that close and slip away hurts,” said Coach Hanson. “We were hoping to beat them tonight, but it should confirm that we can wrestle and beat anybody in the section. We have to clean up a few things and have a great performance in a couple of weeks.”
Crookston will travel to the Lake Park for an individual tournament on Friday and will wrestle in the Northwest Invitational in Fertile on Saturday.
