The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team has Ethan Boll in the semi-finals and Ethan Bowman in the wrestle back quarterfinals Minnesota State High School League Class A Individual Wrestling tournament. Evin Trudeau, Gavyn Hlucny, Carter Coauette, and Hunter Knutson were all eliminated.
EVIN TRUDEAU – 113 POUNDS
Evin Trudeau had a tough first-round draw as he took on Zach Remer of Milla Lacs. Remer, a sophomore, was 39-2 on the season and ranked #2 in the state.
Remer scored the first points five seconds into the match with a takedown for a 2-0 lead. Remer continued to work on Trudeau and added three nearfall points halfway through the period for a 5-0 lead, which was the score going into the second period. Remer started the second period strong by adding two more points on a takedown 20 seconds into the period and added two nearfall points with 1:14 left in the period for a 9-0 lead. A short time later, Remer won by a pin at 3:16.
Trudeau wrestled Micah Gregory of Trinity School, a sophomore that is 34-15 on the year. The first period started with both wrestlers feeling each other out before Gregory scored the first points of the match on a takedown with 35 seconds left in the opening one minute period. 15 seconds later, Gregory added three nearfall points and took a 5-0 lead into the second period. Gregory deferred to start the second period, so Trudeau picked top, and Gregory scored two points on a reversal 17 seconds into the period for a 7-0 lead. Trudeau got on the board with an escape two seconds later and trailed 7-1 going into the third period. There was no scoring in the third period, and Gregory won the match 7-1, and Trudea’s season came to an end.
Trudeau ends the year with a record of 34-15 on the year.
GAVYN HLUCNY – 126 POUNDS
Gavin Hlucny, a freshman and 30-11 on the year, took on Dawson McGee of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, a senior with a 40-4 record and ranked #5 in the state, in the first round.
McGee scored the first points of the match with a takedown with 43 seconds left in the period, and that is how the first period ended. McGee added two more points on another takedown 25 seconds into the second period for a 4-0 lead, which is how the second period ended. In the third period, McGee started on the bottom and scored two more points on a reversal with 1:16 left in the match. Neither wrestler scored the rest of the match, and McGee won by a 6-0 decision.
Hlucny’s season came to an end when McGee lost his quarter-final match 3-2. Hlucny ends the season with a 30-12 record.
ETHAN BOWMAN 145 POUNDS –
Ethan Bowman, a senior with a 37-6 record and ranked #9 in the state, took on Blake Brutger of Kimball Area, a senior with a 25-15 record in the first round.
Bowman started the match strong by scoring two points on a takedown 16 seconds into the match for a 2-0 lead. Brutger scored one point with an escape with 34 seconds left in the period, and Bowman took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Brutger deferred, and Bowman elected to start the second period on the bottom. That worked out for Ethan as he scored two points on a reversal halfway through the period for a 4-1 lead. Nine seconds later, Bowman scored two nearfall points and led 6-1 going into the third period. Ethan continued to dominate the match as he scored three nearfall points for a 9-1 lead 35 seconds into the period, and that is how the match ended, with Bowman winning by a 9-1 major decision to advance to the quarter-finals.
Bowman wrestled Hunter Gruchow of West Central Area in the quarter-finals. Gruchow is 44-6 on the year and ranked #4 in the state.
Gruchow took a 2-0 lead with 43 seconds left in the opening period, but it was all Bowman the rest of the period. Ethan scored a point on an escape with 19 seconds left, added two points on a takedown 10 seconds later, and ended the period with three nearfall points for a 6-2 lead going into the second period. Gruchow scored the first points of the second period with an escape with 66 seconds left in the period to get within a 6-3 deficit. Gruchow finished the period strong with a takedown with 28 seconds left and added two nearfall points nine seconds later, and took a 7-6 lead into the third period. Bowman chose to start the third period on the bottom and scored one point with an escape four seconds into the period to tie the match at 7-7. Gruchow had a huge takedown with 59 seconds left and followed with two nearfall points for an 11-7 lead. Gruchow added two more nearfall points with 10 seconds left for a 13-7 lead before Bowman had an escape with six seconds left before he was taken down two seconds later, and Gruchow won the match 15-8.
In the first round of wrestlebacks, Bowman took on Alexander Schuh of Tracy-Millroy-Balaton. The two wrestlers felt each other out for the first 30 seconds or so, and Bowman scored the first points of the one-minute period with a takedown with 20 seconds left in the period and took a 2-0 lead into the second period. The only points of the second period came halfway through when Bowman scored two more points on a takedown for a 4-0 lead. There was no scoring the rest of the period, and Bowman took a 4-0 lead into the third period. Bowman started the third period on the bottom and scored a point on an escape for a 5-0 lead 23 seconds into the final period. Halfway through the period, Bowman scored two more points on another takedown for a 7-0 lead. Neither wrestler scored the rest of the way, and Bowman won 7-0.
On Saturday morning, Bowman will have a tough task as he will wrestle the #1 ranked Charley Elwood of Medford, who was upset by a 6-5 decision in the quarter-finals. Elwood is 23-3 on the year.
CARTER COAUETTE – 152 POUNDS
Carter Coauette, a junior with a 41-6 record and ranked #9 in the state, took on #10 ranked Sawyer Simmons, a Junior from Royalton/Upsala with a 29-9 record.
There was no scoring in the first period until the final seconds when Simmons received one point after Coauette was called for stalling. Simmons took a 1-0 lead into the second period. Coauette deferred, and Simmons picked bottom to start the second period and scored an escape 21 seconds into the period for a 2-0 lead. There was no more scoring until the final 23 seconds of the period when Simmons scored two points on a takedown and added two nearfall points seven seconds later for a 6-0 lead going into the third period. Coauette started the third period on the bottom and got a reversal 41 seconds into the period to get within a 6-2 deficit. Simmons added some insurance points with an escape with 27 seconds left in the match and two more points on a takedown, winning the match 9-2.
Coauette’s season came to an end when Simmons lost in the quarterfinals. Carter finished the season with a 41-7 record.
HUNTER KNUTSON 182 POUNDS –
Hunter Knutson, a senior with a 28-13 record and ranked #8 in the state, took on #10 ranked Nick Slater, a sophomore from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial with a 36-10 record.
The first period didn’t have any scoring until Slater scored two points on a takedown with 50 seconds left in the period, and just like that, Slater beat Knutson by a pin at 1:10.
Knutson’s career came to an end when Slater lost by a 4-2 decision to the #2 ranked wrestler in the state. Knutson ended his senior year with a record of 28-14.
ETHAN BOLL 220 POUNDS –
Ethan Boll, a senior with a 41-1 record and ranked #1 in the state and the defending state champion at 220 pounds, took on Tyler Mix of Dover-Eyota with a 35-8 record and ranked #8 in the state.
Boll, as he has done all season long, came out strong and scored two points on a takedown 16 seconds into the match. 13 seconds later, he scored two nearfall points, and with 67 seconds left in the period, he added two more near fall points before winning by pin at 1:08 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Boll wrestled Bode Roberts, a junior from New York Mills, with a 30-6 record in the quarter-finals.
Boll continued his domination at the state tournament as he scored two points on a takedown five seconds into the match. Boll gave up an escape three seconds later, as he does frequently, and followed up with another takedown six seconds later for a 4-1 lead and won the match by pin 33 seconds into the match to advance to the state semi-finals on Saturday morning.
Boll will wrestle Bryce Holm of Royalton/Upsala in the semi-finals on Saturday. Holm is 38-4 on the year and ranked #5 in the state.
