Red Book Club – Crookston Public Library
The Crookston Public Library’s Reading by the Red Book Club will meet in the library’s beautiful River Room to discuss I Cheerfully Refuse by Minnesota author Leif Enger. The book is a dystopian novel set in near-future America. It follows a musician named Rainy as he sails around Lake Superior in search of his book-loving wife, pursued by a ruthless villain. The group will meet on Tuesday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library, located at 110 North Ash St. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
Crookston High School Closures for Police Training
Due to the Crookston Police Department needing our High School building for training purposes, the building will be closed to all staff and public on Tuesday, June 24th from noon until evening and on Wednesday, June 25th from noon until evening. If you are a summer staff person at the CHS building, you will not be able to have access to the building during those times.

Red Lake County Fair
The Red Lake County Fair is June 26 through June 29 in Oklee. On Friday, the 4-H Food Stand opens. There are poultry and rabbit shows, horse and livestock judging, and Senior Day with entertainment and bingo. Enjoy a pulled pork meal at 6:00p.m. Saturday is Kids Day, with many kids’ activities like the Baja Races at 3:00 p.m., The Helping Hands Livestock Show, Pet Show, and on Sunday the 4-H Awards Program.
Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction for Caleb Halland
There will be a Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction for Caleb Halland on Friday, June 27 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Crookston Eagles Club. Free will donations will be accepted. Caleb will be donating a kidney to his dad, Jason, who has Stage 5 chronic kidney disease and has been undergoing dialysis.
Red Lake County Senior Day at the Fair
The Red Lake County Senior Day at the Fair for 2025 will be Friday, June 27, at the Oklee Community Hall. A light lunch will be served at noon with entertainment by The David Malmberg Show of Comedy, Voice Tossing, Storytelling, and music will begin at 1:00 p.m. There will be Outstanding Senior Bingo Games and a drawing for $100. Polk County Fair
The Polk County Fair is July 9 through the 13th at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Fertile. Take in the rodeo, talent contest, Baja Racing, parade, Dock Dogs events, Super Demo Derby, Senior Citizen Day, kids pedal pull, petting zoo, food contests, fireworks, entertainment on the Hanson Memorial free stage, play bingo and enjoy the exhibits and food vendors. Carnival rides must be purchased online.
Northwest Research and Outreach Center – Crop and Soils Day
The Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) Crop and Soils Day will be Wednesday, July 16, at the Maintenance/Farm Operations building south of Polk County HWY 71. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. for the morning small grains tours. Tours start at 8:00. Lunch at noon followed by registration for the afternoon sugarbeet tour at 12:30. Kittson County Free Gate Fair in Hallock
The Kittson County Free Gate Fair in Hallock is July 16 through 20. There will be no pre-sale tickets; buy your Amusement Attractions tickets at the Fairgrounds. Take in the talent show, concert by 32 Below, Baja Races, pancake breakfast, exhibits, food vendors, free stage entertainment, bingo, Travel Escape Room, UMC Stem hands on activity, food contests, corn hole tournament, Karaoke, kids pedal pull and scavenger hunt, Lumberjack Show and much more.
Community Picnics
The Polk and Red Lake County DFL proudly invite residents to a series of community picnics this summer aimed at fostering connection, civic engagement, and shared values. Picnic dates are as follows:
July 16th, 5–7 PM at The Landing at the Bend, Red Lake Falls – featuring Representative Steven Gander as special guest speaker. Food will be available for purchase from The Landing.
August 20th, 5–7 PM at Ray Ecklund Park, Crookston – with special guest Ben Schierer, author of “Perpich: A Minnesota Original.”
DNR Hunter Safety Training
The DNR Hunter Safety Training class for ages 11 and older will begin in August. Classes will be held at the Crookston Gun Club from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, August 12 and 19, Thursdays, August 14 and 21, and Friday, August 15 and 22. West Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District – Scholarship
The West Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering a $1,000 college scholarship for a degree in Agricultural Science or Natural Resource Science. To be eligible, applicants must be West Polk County residents, attending high schools within West Polk County, and graduating in the spring of 2025. Applications can be found on their website at https://www.westpolkswcd.org/environmental-education.html. The Deadline to apply is August 25, 2025.

Twig and Branch Collection in Crookston
Twig and Branch Collection in Crookston is on the second and fourth Mondays of each month through October. Branches must be cut into four-foot lengths, bundled, and placed on the curb. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule a pickup. Leaves, grass, and other compostable material must be in the clear City of Crookston Bags, and they will be collected on your regular garbage collection day.
