CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY WITH THE CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Crookston Fire Department would like to remind residents to be safe with their Christmas Trees whether real or artificial.  If you have a real tree, Crookston Firefighter Chris Klawitter says one of the most important safety measures is to water the tree daily. “This is the time of year that everybody is putting up a Christmas Tree obviously,” said Klawitter.  “Be cautious of how you do it.  If you are going to put up a real Christmas Tree, make sure it’s watered very well.  Watered daily as a matter of fact.  They do suck up a lot of water.  A real Christmas Tree that is dry is very dangerous.”

Klawitter also provides some additional tips for real trees and tips that apply to both real and artificial trees. “Before you put it in the stand be sure to cut a couple of inches off the base of the trunk to get fresh grain that hasn’t been sealed by sap,” said Klawitter.  “That way the tree will actually suck the water up through the trunk and stay hydrated as best it can.  Make sure it’s at least three feet away from any heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or other lights.  Make sure it’s not blocking your exit.  Make sure its not in the way.  Don’t put it in front of an exit, not in the way in front of your front door, the hall or somewhere if you’re trying to get out in the event of a fire it’s in your way.  Never, ever put real candles on or near a tree even an artificial tree please.  Make sure you use lights that are UL listed.  Look at your label and see the maximum of lights you can string together.  Don’t exceed that because they will get too hot.  Make sure all your lights are in good shape – no frayed wires, loose bulbs, loose connections.  And always turn the lights off when you leave or go to bed.  Christmas Trees, real or artificial, are great to have just please do it safely.”
