CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST HOMECOMING DANCE ON SEPTEMBER 24

The Crookston High School announced earlier today that they will officially be hosting a homecoming dance on Friday night, September 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. inside the Crookston High School. The decision comes after Crookston Student Council Members Olivia Huck, Clair Oman, Clara Meyer, Amelia Overgaard, Hannah Loraas, and Aleah Bienek wrote a letter to the Crookston Public Schools Administration regarding the potential cancellation of the dance. Leaders at the High School met and decided it was safe to proceed forward.

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Olson discussed moving forward with the dance and what it will look like. “On the prompting of some of the leaders here at the High School, and upon their recommendation, we have decided to move forward with a dance, but it’s going to look a little different this year,” said Olson. “We want to make this as safe as possible so that we will be having a two-hour dance instead of a three-hour dance because of the time factor. We will be having students getting temperature checks at the door, and of course, if they’re symptomatic will ask them to stay home. It’s about keeping others safe and not just yourself.”

There will also be recommended masking for all in attendance, and all who can get vaccinated are encouraged to do so. Masks will not be required at the dance, and all the information will be communicated to the students and public, so everyone is aware of the guidelines.

Crookston High School Junior and Student Council Member Lily Groven said she’s happy for all the students, especially the seniors, now that they’ll have a homecoming dance. “I think it’s really exciting for the seniors especially,” said Groven. “They haven’t had a dance since their sophomore year, so to get to have one last homecoming before they graduate is really cool. And for all the students as well to have a homecoming dance when we definitely thought we weren’t going to have one.”

Olson believes having the dance is a win for the students and discussed his initial concern with originally having a dance. “I think it’s a win for students for sure,” said Olson. My biggest concern with initially having a dance was based on my wanting to preserve in-person instruction. Anytime you take a risk like this, you up the chances of spreading the virus within the community. Trying to mitigate that was the reason we weren’t going to have it, but after talking with people, we decided to take the dance on and put some parameters on it so the students could have one.”
