Climax-Fisher Knight Girls Basketball shuts down Mahnomen/Waubun

The Climax-Fisher Knights Girls Basketball team held the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds to under 20 points in each half en route to a 59-38 victory at the Fisher High School Gym on Friday night.

FIRST HALF
The Knights got off to a great start to the game, scoring the first 12 points, with 7 of them coming from Peyton Hoffman, including the first 6, 3 from Lucy Paulsrud, and 2 from Lexie Korynta. The Thunderbirds finally got on the board with a layup to snap the opening run, and then after another 3-pointer by Peyton Hoffman, both teams were scoreless for just over 3 minutes of game time. With under 10 minutes remaining, the scoring picked up with force, as both teams hit 3-pointers to give the Knights a 20-8 lead with 8:19 to go in the half. At 24-9 with 5:42 to go, Peyton Hoffman delivered a great pass from on the floor to Paulsrud to make it 26-9, and that seemed to fuel the Knights again, as they pulled ahead to a 32-12 lead with just over 3 minutes left. In those fonal 3 minutes, the KNights hit two 3-pointers to go up 25, but the Thunderbirds battled back, hitting two of their own to bring the score to 38-19. Peyton Hoffman got the last laugh, though, as her putback bucket with 35 seconds left gave the Knights a whopping 40-19 lead as the half came to an end.

SECOND HALF
The Knights open the second half by scoring the first 7 points, with 5 of them coming from Peyton Hoffman, giving her 25 points at this stage. Kennedy McArthur hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 47-22, and for the next few minutes the teams would exchange buckets and free throws. Once the Knights got the lead to 53-26, no points were scored for another 3 minute stretch, and that stretch would extend to nearly 5 minutes before the next points, which would come from the Knights on two free throws from Kadence Korynta. That would make it 55-26 with 7:39 to go, and the points would continue to be sparse, but the Thunderbirds would score the next 4 points to cut the lead to 55-30. The Thunderbirds extended the run to 6-0 before Peyton Hoffman scored yet again to put the Knights up 25 with 3:32 to go. The Mahnomen/Waubun defense vastly improved from the first half, and they continued to turn Knights turnovers into buckets, but the first half deficit was just too much to overcome, and the Knights would hold on for a 59-38 win.

Ckimax-Fisher is not 15-8 on the season, and have now won 9 consecutive games.
