Winjum’s 35 points leads Crookston Boys Basketball past Menagha

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team’s Reggie Winjum’s 35 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals helped beat the Menagha Braves 70-60 in a Section 8AA game played at the Crookston High School gymnasium

FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game on a 7-2 run with a three-pointer from Carter Fee and baskets from Reggie Winjum and Nolan Johnson. Menagha answered with three free throws to get within a 7-5 deficit and the teams battled back and forth for six minutes. Crookston led 18-16 when Winjum made a free throw and Gunnar Groven made a jump shot for a 21-16 lead with eight minutes left in the half. After a Menagha basket, Nolan Cassavant scored. The Braves made one free throw before Nolan Johnson scored in the paint. After another Brave free throw, Nolan Johnson added another basket as he was dominating under the basket and the Pirates led 27-20. Menagha scored the next five points before Winjum drove to the basket and scored and Johnson added a free throw for a 30-25 lead. The Braves went on a 5-1 run to get within a 31-30 deficit with 1:25 to go in the half. Winjum made two free throws with 38 seconds left and with one second left in the half, Beau Smith made a three-pointer to give the Pirates a 36-30 lead going into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
The second half proved to be a dandy, as both teams made several runs. Menagha started the half on a 7-2 run to get within a 38-37 deficit. The teams exchanged three-pointers before Crookston’s Johnson scored four points for a 45-40 lead. Crookston led 46-42 with 10 minutes left in the game when Menagha went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game and led 51-46 with eight minutes remaining. Crookston responded in a big way as Winjum took over the game. Winjum made a three-pointer, Johnson made two free throws, and Winjum made another three-pointer. After a Brave free throw, Winjum scored four more points, and after a Menagha basket, Winjum scored five more points, and Groven added a free throw to cap an 18-3 run for a 64-54 lead with three minutes to go. Winjum scored the final six Pirate points as the teams each scored six points in the final three minutes, and Crookston won the game 70-60.
Reggie Winjum had 35 points and 10 rebounds. Nolan Johnson had 16 points and 13 rebounds for a pair of Pirate double-doubles.

Crookston improves to 3-14 on the year and will host Stephen-Argyle on Monday. Menahga drops to 4-15 on the year.
