CROOKSTON BOY’S BASKETBALL SCORES 91 AND ALL SIX SENIORS SCORE TO BEAT ROSEAU ON SENIOR NIGHT

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by exploding for 54 first-half points and held on the rest of the way for 91-62 Section 8AA victory over the Roseau Rams on Senior Night at the Crookston High School gymnasium. All six seniors scored in the game and Caden Osborn broke the Pirate Boys Basketball career rebounding record in the game. Crookston’s Jack Garmen tied the Pirate Career Charges taken record with three in the game for 31 in his career.

FIRST HALF –
Roseau started the game with back-to-back baskets from Jace Hulst for a 4-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Crookston’s first points came several seconds later when Caden Osborn scored in the paint and after a Roseau basket, the Pirates answered with a 19-4 run. In the run, Crookston had seven points from Easton Tangquist, and four points each from Carter Bruggeman, Walker Winjum, and Osborn for a 21-10 lead with 10:38 left in the game.  “We aren’t used to playing with the lead, so it was nice to see us expand the lead,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “The boys were playing well and shooting well.”  The teams battled back-and-forth for the next five minutes and Crookston led 37-28 with five minutes left in the game and caught fire hitting four three-pointers and finished the half on a 17-8 run led by Tangquist’s nine points, Osborn’s five, and Winjum’s three points to take a 54-36 lead into halftime.  “We shot the ball really well and did some nice things,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “We had a number of different people shooting and had a little lapse there and responded and made some nice plays.”

SECOND HALF –
Roseau started the second half with a Jere Bender three-pointer, his 20th point of the game (which was over half his team’s points). The teams battled back-and-forth and Crookston led 59-42 with 15:21 left in the game. Roseau finally put a run together when Jed Dunham scored seven straight points to get within a 59-49 deficit. Crookston responded in a big way by going on a 19-0 run behind Jack Garmen’s nine points on three three-pointers, six points from Osborn, and two points each from Bruggeman and Winjum for a 78-49 lead with seven minutes left in the game. “Easton Tangquist has been on fire the past couple of games and that is good to see,” said Coach Garmen. “The boys wanted to get everybody in the game and get the others on the bench in and they kept working hard.” Towards the end fo the Pirate run, Caden Osborn grabbed his 12th rebound of the game and became Crookston Boys Basketball’s all-time career rebounding leader with 718 rebounds, breaking Aaron Hollcraft’s record. “When he came on the scene his sophomore year we saw he had a knack for getting the rebounds,” said Coach Garmen. “Aaron had a great career and wasn’t very big either so we have had some smaller guys at the top and it was good to see Caden come back from the knee injury and he played a good game tonight.” Crookston went to the bench and played five seniors in the final five minutes of the game and all six Pirate seniors scored in the game as they cruised to a 91-62 victory. “It was a good team effort and our first unit got things going and all the seniors scored and that was the most enjoyable part of the game.”  When asked about Jack Garmen tying the charges taken record, Coach Garmen said, “Not many kids like to do it and he is on a mission to take the charges.  He will take a few more of them and he has a few more years to break the record.”

Crookston snaps a four-game losing streak and was coming off their worst game of the year and bounced back nicely to improve to 9-15 on the year. Crookston will travel to Bagley on Tuesday and the varsity game will start at 4:00 p.m. Roseau drops to 6-18 on the year.
