Crookston Boys Basketball beats Climax-Fisher in OT

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team’s Reggie Winjum scored 12 points in the final three minutes of regulations and in overtime to lead his team to a 62-57 overtime victory over the Climax-Fisher Knights in a game played at the Climax-Shelly High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston jumped out to a 4-2 lead with baskets from Hunter Nicholas and Reggie Winjum. Climax-Fisher answered with their best stretch of the half as they went on an 8-0 run with three points from Ty Torrence, two free throws by Gabe Wentzel, and a Tyler Evitts three-pointer for a 10-4 lead less than five minutes into the game. Crookston’s Matthew Contreras made a basket to stop the run and that started a basket exchange between the teams. Climax-Fisher led 15-8 when Nicholas scored in the paint and Winjum made a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 15-13 deficit. Crookston would get the deficit down to one several times over the next five minutes and trailed 28-25 with two minutes left in the half. Crookston ended the half with two Winjum free throws and a Nicholas basket with 1:20 remaining for a 29-28 lead. Nobody scored the rest of the half and Crookston took a 29-28 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
The second half started with four lead changes and the fourth came when Crookston’s Tyler Michaelson made five straight points to give the Pirates a 36-32 lead. Climax-Fisher responded with two points apiece from Ty Torrence and Tyler Evitts, and a three-point play by Jaycer Davis and the Knights took a 39-36 lead over four mintues into the half. Crookston’s Nicholas stopped the run with three points before Climax-Fisher scored five more points with a Gabe Wentzel free throw and four straight points from Sawyer Erickson. Climax-Fisher had a 46-40 lead for over four minutes as both teams struggled to score. A minute later, Climax-Fisher led 49-43 when Crookston’s Rylan Lubarski hit a three-pointer from the top of the key. After one Knight free throw, Crookston’s Winjum made two free throws to get within a 50-48 deficit with three minutes left in regulation. Two minutes later, Winjum made two more free throws to tied the game at 50-50. Climax-Fisher’s Jace Motl drove the baseline and got a layup with 31 seconds left to give the Knights a 52-50 lead. Crookston’s Winjum responded 16 seconds later with a basket in the paint to tie the game at 52-52. Climax-Fisher turned the ball over with three seconds left and Crookston didn’t get a shot off befor ethe buzzer and the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 52-52.

OVERTIME –
Crookston seemingly couldn’t buy a layup or a basket in the paint all night, missingl at least 25 to 30 “easy shots,” but that all changed in the overtime. Crookston’s Winjum, who took over at the end of regulation continued to dominate in overtime. Winjum made a layup 30 seconds into overtime to give Crookston a 54-52 lead. Climax-Fisher responded with an Evitts basket to tie the game. Winjum answered with another basket in the paint and Crookston got a steal and a long pass to Michael Deng for another layup and a 58-54 lead with 1:40 left in overtime. Climax-Fisher’s Wentzel made a three-pointer to get his team within one points only to have Crookston end the final minute of overtime on a 4-0 run with a Nicholas basket and two free throws by Winjum and Crookston won the game 62-57.
Crookston was 13 of 24 from the free throw line with Reggie Winjum making 8 of 9 at the charity stripe. Climax-Fisher was 9 of 17 from the line Ty Torrence making five of seven to lead the way.

Crookston improves to 4-12 on the year and will host #8 ranked Warroad at 6:30 p.m. Climax-Fisher drops to 3-15 on the year and will take on Fertile-Beltrami on Tuesday.
