Crookston Boys Basketball uses great all-around game to beat Fosston

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team used an all-around solid game to beat the Fosston Greyhounds 62-52 in a game played at the Fosston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Fosston scored the first basket of the game before Crookston’s Hunter Nicholas made back-to-back baskets for a 4-2 lead. Fosston’s Ryne Duppong made two free throws to tie the game at 4-4. Fosston had a 7-6 lead after a Duppong three-pointer and that is when Crookston’s offense got going. Reggie Winjum made back-to-back baskets, and after a Greyhound basket, Nicholas made a three-pointer and scored in the paint to cap a 9-2 run for a 15-9 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Fosston answered with a Dawson Bailie three-point play and a basket from Kelton Gray. After a Pirate basket by Michael Deng, the Greyhounds added a basket to cap a 7-2 run, and Crookston’s lead was 17-16. Crookston’s Matthew Contreras made a three-pointer before Fosston made a pair of baskets to tie the game at 20 with 3:18 remaining in the half. Crookston’s Winjum made a shot before Carter Fee buried a three-pointer for a 25-20 lead. Fosston’s Duppong scored before Crookston’s Winjum made a three-pointer with two seconds left to give the Pirates a 28-22 lead going into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston started the second half with baskets from Tyler Michaelson and Winjum for a 32-22 lead 95 seconds into the half. A few minutes later, Fosston’s Duppong hit a three-pointer only to have Crookston’s Winjum answer with a basket, and Contreras added a free throw for a 37-27 lead. Fosston slowly chipped away at the Crookston lead and got within a 47-43 deficit with 6:01 left in the game after back-to-back Duppong baskets. The teams exchanged baskets before Crookston went on an 8-0 run with Nicholas scoring six and Contreras adding a basket for a 57-45 lead with 2:10 to go. Fosston didn’t go down without a fight as Gray made a three-pointer, and Duppong added a free throw to get within a 57-49 deficit. The Pirates’ Jack Everett made a basket, and after two Duppong free throws, Nicholas grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a 61-51 lead with one minute remaining. Crookston held on for a 62-52 victory.

Crookston improves to 5-13 on the year and will travel to Stephen-Argyle on Monday. You can hear the game on KROX Radio. Fosston drops to 9-11 on the year.
