The Crookston Pirate Boys Golf team shot one of their best rounds of the year with a 350 and finished eighth place out of 12 teams at the Park Rapids Invitational at the Headwaters Golf Course. Detroit Lakes won the round with a 307, 13 strokes better than Staples-Motley. “We posted a decent score for us as a team,” said Pirate Coach Steve Kofoed. “We had four scores under 100 for the first time this year.”
Crookston had three golfers shoot in the 80’s and was led by Blaine Andringa with an 83. “He got on a big string of pars,” said Coach Kofoed. “He had a little bit of a hiccup, I think on 12, but he is getting closer to getting into the 70’s and he needs to realize he can do better and get into the 70’s that would be good for him.”
Kaleb Thingelstad shot an 84. “He had a few birdies and a couple of holes he would like back,” said Coach Kofoed. “He is realizing the short game is very important on good courses like today.”
Jaxon Wang shot an 89. “He had some good holes and then in the middle of the round he started to struggle with his driver,” said Coach Kofoed. “He was happy to break 90 and did well on the toughest hole here so that was nice to see.”
Ashton Shockman shot a 94. “Ashton seems to be right around the mid-90’s all season,” said Coach Kofoed. “He was joking that his golf ball had a magnet to attract it to trees so I told him to change golf balls and that didn’t work so it was nice to see him battle to get a good score.”
Lucas Winger shot a 105. “Lucas had a solid round and had a few times where he got stuck in the trees and threw away a couple of strokes,” said Coach Kofoed. “He had some solid holes too and that was nice to see.”
Brannon Tangquist, who just passed his drivers test on Thursday, shot a 108. “On his first hole he had a big number and he never really go back into recovery mode,” said Coach Kofoed. “It seemed like the second shot of the day affected him the rest of the round and that happens sometimes.”
Crookston will travel to Bemidji Town and Country Club on Monday.
