CROOKSTON BOY’S GOLF FINISH 5TH AT ‘PRE-SECTION’ MEET AT BEMIDJI

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Golf team shot a 354 and finished in fifth place out of five teams at the Pre-Section 8AA Meet at Bemidji’s Town and Country Club.  Roseau won the meet with a 314, 41 strokes better than runner-up Park Rapids.  “All-in-all we played pretty decent,” said Pirate Coach Steve Kofoed. “We were eight strokes better than we were a week and a half ago, so it was pretty good.”

Crookston was led once again by Kaleb Thingelstad who shot a 79, good for fifth place individually.  Kaleb had two birdies (on the first hole and 11th hole), he added nine pars, five bogies, and three double bogies.  “He was hitting the ball well and had pretty good control of his game,” said Coach Kofoed. “He had a couple of doubles that shot him in the foot a little bit, but he finished in the top five and had a really nice round.”

The rest of the Pirates ranged from 92 to 100’s.  Jaxon Wang shot a 92.  “Jaxon was inconsistent, but played well,” said Coach Kofoed. “He was in position to be in the mid 80’s up to his last two holes and that was a little hiccup for him and I feel he was a handful of strokes better than last time we were here.”

Brannon Tangquist and Garrett Fischer shot 95’s.  “Brannon said he had his tournament-low for the year and that was good.  He had a couple of big numbers, but found ways to recover on the next hole and had a solid round,” said Coach Kofoed. “Garrett started a little rough and actually gave me his driver on hole eight for a couple of holes before he took it back and he had a birdie on hole 11 and played better on the back nine and he had a good score for his first tournament here.”

Gavin Anderson and Ashton Shockman had 100’s.  “A 100 for Gavin Anderson who hadn’t played here before was a pretty good score,” said Coach Kofoed. “Ashton was a little disappointed because he wanted to beat his score (99) from last time we were here and came up a little short.  The greens were just punched so they were a little bumpy today, but overall all the guys shot well.”

Overall, it was a good day for the Pirates on the course that the Section 8AA tournament will be played. “It was nice to get on the course again and it is nice to know we are right there with everybody,” said Coach Kofoed. “Hopefully we can earn the opportunity to come back here in a few weeks.”
