The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team had an avalanche of misfortune on Tuesday night against the East Grand Forks Green Wave, as a shorthanded goal and penalty shot were part of a six-goal second period that saw the Green Wave surge to a 7-0 victory at the Crookston Sports Center.
FIRST PERIOD
As the first period got started, both teams struggled to get offense flowing, as each team only recorded two shots on goal in the first four minutes of play. However, after this point, the Green Wave took over, preventing the Pirates from making any offensive surges and seemingly possessing the puck for the remainder of the period. The defense for Crookston was great, however, and that started with Brady Chandler, who made fantastic saves throughout the period. He was unable to stop everything, however, as a great pass from behind the net gave Nolan Meulebroeck an open lane, and he scored to give EGF a 1-0 lead. Though the Pirates only got 1 shot on goal in the final 12 minutes of the period, the defense held firm, and the period ended with the score still at 1-0.
SECOND PERIOD
IN the second period, things completely turned on its head for the Pirates. The Green Wave came out on fire, scoring two goals in 25 seconds to quickly go up 3-0. The Green Wave did commit many penalties, but at 5:26, EGF got a shorthanded breakaway that was cashed in by Braden Overgaard, putting the Green Wave up 4-0. A few minutes later, another penalty was committed, and this time it was an unsportsmanlike penalty by Wyatt Coartz, and it was served by 4th liner Easton Olson. He would get a breakaway immediately upon leaving the box, putting the Green Wave up 5-o. In the final 7 minutes of the period, Jay Reese was assessed a five-minute major penalty for kneeing, and EGF cashed in on the power play to take a 6-0 lead. It looked like the period would end there, but as the clock hit zeroes, the Green Wave were assessed a penalty shot, and Tucker Lovejoy was able to beat Brady Chandler, sending the game into the third period with a 7-0 Green Wave lead.
THIRD PERIOD
The third period consisted of running time and only ten shots on goal, seven of which coming from EGF. The Pirates did get another power play and had a wide-open look, but the shot was stopped by Noah Schindele, who was a perfect 11 for 11 on the night. Overall, the Green Wave outshot the Pirates 38-11, and were able to cruise to a 7-0 victory.
Crookston falls to 8-4-1 on the year, 4-3 in the section. EGF is now 6-7-1, 2-2 in section play.
